Does formula really expire after 30 days?

I am breastfeeding my LO but I am in the process of weaning him off because I return to work in a week. I bought formula 6 weeks ago and opened it. The formula hasn't been used in the last 6 weeks but its been in the air tight container. The container says not to use after 30 days. Its the infant Enfamil powder formula. Is it still safe to use the formula or do I really need to throw it away?

Thanks for any advice!

  • I don't know about the powder specifically, but I would stick with the manufacturers recommendation. I use the ready-to-serve and it is only good for 48 hours. Formula in general rapidly breeds bacteria and the powder containers aren't sterile so... I wouldn't be comfortable risking it! A shame to waste but necessary. :)

  • There should be an experation date on the package somewhere. or you could try returning it to the store if it's unopened.

  • If it has been opened, after 30 days it needs to be tossed.

  • I would follow the package recommendations.  There might be vitamins/nutrients that will not be as effective/potent beyond the 30 days.  You may want to switch to the To-Go pouches.  They provide only enough for an 8-oz bottle, so you can open one fresh every few bottles until your little one starts taking more formula.  It's better to be safe than sorry with your baby's health.
  • I would call the 1-800 number on the side of the formula can and ask about it.  They can give you the exact reasoning behind the 30 days and you can make your own choice.

I believe it has to do with the nutrients breaking down but not sure.
