Some people have also used Riann as Ryan, for girls.

Well then they should have picked either the Y or the I.  They don't need both.  Either way I felt bad for him.  He'll be correcting that spelling for his whole life.

  • A coworker named her DAUGHTER Ryann.  I guess to make it more "feminine".  Ughhhhhhhh

  • I've met a boy named Rion and a girl named Ryann.

Gah!  Those are horrible!  And Ryan should never be used for a girl IMHO...no matter how it's misspelled.

DD is Evangeline Ryan. Traditionally, Ryan is a female name like Ashely is traditionally a male name.

Citation please? Everything I can find says that Ryan is an Anglicized version of the Irish surname O Riain, meaning something along the lines of "little king."

  • My good friend's name is Rian (pronounced Ryan) and she always get called Rain, Ree-ann...never Ryan.

  • for what it's worth, Raiyan is an Indian/Persian boy's name that means king/prince.  It's spelled with the i/y combo because of the etymology of the sound...

What I was going to write, but I think it can be a girl's name too because my sister's best friend growing up was Raiyan/Riyan and she was a Persian girl. Pronounced Rye On.

  • In my sorority we had a Ryan, a Rian, and a Rianne. All pronounced the same. The last one, IMO, should have been pronounced Ree-Ann.

  • I have a female cousin named Ryan.

If I saw Rian/Riann, I would automatically think it was prounounced Ree-ann.

Ryan with any extra n's would make me think there was emphasis on the -ann/e part.

Ryan is the only spelling that I would actually pronounce the way it's pronounced.
