Cloth Diapering

Prepping/Wash Cycle Question

I ordered some prefolds from GMD and started prepping them tonight. They came with instructions to do one wash cycle with a tiny bit of detergent on cold, and then 3-5 wash and dry cycles on hot. I did the cold cycle and went to do the hot cycle and realizes my washer has no setting for hot, only warm and cold. I started it  on warm, but the "warm" cycle is more like room temperature when you put your hand in the water. Does this mean I won't be able to wash the CDs at home with our current dryer?

Re: Prepping/Wash Cycle Question

  • Wait... your washer, or your dryer?

If it's your washer, just boil a huge pot of water on the stove, fill your washer with warm, dump it in, agitate, then add the diapers.  Personally, I would just wash them on warm and do that maybe twice a month.

Could you try bumping up the temp on your water heater before you do laundry? For everyday diapers, warm might be fine. To prep I think you need pretty hot water to release those oils. You can either boil or add boiling water to the washer.

  • Sorry, I meant washer. I had no idea you could add boiling water to the washer -- thanks so much for the suggestion! If it's just prepping that's an issue, but not everyday washing, I may just go over to my mom's house and use her washer to prep them, but if not, I will definitely try the boiling water thing. Thank you!
