October 2011 Moms

This is unreal.

We went to the pharmacy to get MH's new Rx filled.  We walked out with nothing.  We simply can not afford it.  After the insurance copay it was $570.00 for one month.  That is nearly 7k a year.

I am so upset right now.  We called the Dr. and his secretary said they will see if there is a different Rx he can take.

Things were just going to good, something like this was bound to happen.

  • That's terrible, Penny, I'm so sorry.  I was prescribed something last week that was $60 with the copay, and I thought THAT was ridiculous.  Your story is just atrocious.  I hope the doctor can come up with an alternative.

One of the things I was told when I was quoted the $60 after copay amount was that you may be able to contact your insurance company to get a listing of all covered drugs and each drug's "preference category."  Then you can tell your doctor about the different tiers, and s/he can hopefully find an alternative in a more preferred tier.

Oh, my goodness, that's crazy!  I'm so sorry, that has to be so frustrating.  You've finally figured out what's wrong and how to fix it, and then this happens.  I hope the dr can find a better solution!

The secretary said they would be calling Medica to help them figure it out.  ...Maybe we will be taking a trip every three months to Canada. Stick out tongue

  • I hope there is a solution to this, and maybe it will be Canada. I had a similar experience here, though. My meds would have been 700,- CAN for a month. I have coverage for 1500,- a year. Yeah, well. I still got them and they didn't work. So onto the next. I am med free now for a while, as a) I am not willing to take meds and endanger babies and b) I have a pretty good grip on the Crohn's as long as I cook from scratch, watch what I eat and drink and so on.

Maybe also try a naturopath. I know it helped a few people I know.

  • I am not trying to be to personal or nosy but what is the Rx? A lot of the meds are extremely expensive but pharma often has drug payment support programs. For example, I am on Enbrel and a 3 month supply cost $6400. My co-pay is $1800 for a 3 mo supply. I am enrolled in the Enbrel support program so I really only pay $10 per month. Just a suggestion and maybe something to look into.

I don't remeber the name off hand but I should look into that. Thanks you!

  • You could also ask the office if they have samples. We used to have samples of certain drugs that reps left in the office for people that couldn't afford it. The office may also have a drug rep they can contact to see if the rep could bring samples also. Just a thought!

This is great news, although I bet there will be some sad Craigslist trollers out there.
