TTC after 35

antibiotics

i have had a cold for three weeks. it's remarkably better but my ears are still clogged, i'm tired and have pressure in my sinuses. yesterday i thought maybe my ears were a little better, but i already had a doctor's appointment so i kept it.

saw the doc this morning and she said it's sinus infection. i told her i was TTC and asked if antibiotics affect fertility/ovulation (i have read conflicting things on the internet, but certainly know of at least one person who accidentally got pregnant from their BCP failing on antibiotics). she said the stronger ones do and prescribed me something else.

even so, i'm undecided on if i want to take them. i probably will, but i really don't want to if it makes a different in TTC this month. we are on our third cycle, first with progesterone. the second cycle (last month) if you count it, i was out of town during O. i just don't want another month to go by...

Re: antibiotics

  • There are several antibiotics you can take while pregnant that are safe so I'd imagine the same rules would apply when TTC. I think it's probably more important for you to get well since having any kind of infection would probably hurt your chances more than the antibiotics to treat it would. As long as your Dr. is prescribing something safe to take while pregnant I'm sure you'll be fine.

I would think that if (1) you are sick enough to go to a doctor, (2) you told your doctor your were TTC, (3)  you trust your doctor, and (4) your doctor wrote you a prescription, you should be fine taking the antibiotic you were prescribed.

If you have a real concern, I would talk to your pharmacist.  A few months ago, I was prescribed a category C drug (even though I was TTC and in the 2ww) because I have a drug allergy that prevented me from taking a "safer" antibiotic.  The pharmacist noticed that I was also taking a prenatal vitamin and alerted me to the risks (and called my doctor to make sure it wasn't a mistake).

It also seems that you might have a different concern than the example you gave. Antibiotics can keep BCP from being effective, but if you are TTC, I would assume you aren't on BCP (and that you want to get pregnant).

    Good luck.

sorry to be confusing. I just didn't understand how you could both be at risk for getting pregnant if you are on BCP and at the same time it could also mess with ovulation. Just seemed like my googling was giving conflicting information (go figure). The doctor said some strong ones do mess with fertility. I did mention I am TTC and she gave me a different one. Anyway, I have taken the first dose of the antibiotic and some mucinex she recommended and I am off to bed!
