DD Hates the Moby and the Sling

Yes I did post another just underneath this but this is an entirely unrelated question so...

As I said before, DD hates the Moby and I have two slings from Seven Slings that she doesn't like either. I did the slings when she was a newborn and she liked them okay then, but once she could hold her head up she didn't want to be in them anymore. I got the Moby when she was about 3 1/2 months old and she had just started to move around a lot and explore. It was bad timing I guess because I've only used it one time successfully since then. That was quite an investment for me to have only used it the once.

She likes being held ok when she is feeling yucky or sleepy, but she doesn't want to be picked up at any other time. I would love to be able to carry her around (especially for walks and in the grocery store) but she doesn't seem to like anything I try. She squirms to get out and then cries if I don't take her out and put her down. She would rather ride in a stroller or the shopping cart.

Do some babies just not like to be carried or am I doing it wrong? Should I try different carriers? I read that all babies liked to be carried since it reminds them of the womb but do they outgrow that or what???

I think all kids are different.  DS1 was content to be in a carrier all day.  DS2 isn't crazy about it but accepts it.  He prefers the side carry in the sling so he can see what is going on.  Maybe you can try different holds to see if she prefers one or the other.  If she likes being in a stroller or cart and safe, I would just go with it. She might just be a less "tactile" baby.

  • Eh, I don't ever like those "all babies" proclamations because I think every baby is different, but I digress...

Have you tried having her forward facing in the Moby? Do you know anyone with a carrier that will do back carry that you could borrow to try out?

Please DO NOT do this! A Moby is a stretchy wrap and does not have enough support. In general it's not considered a good idea to have the baby facing out at all. There are other options for carriers that can be worn on your back such as a woven wrap or a soft structured carrier (not the Moby) which may suit your DD better! Please just don't wear your baby in a moby forward facing or on your back it is soooo dangerous! Keep trying! My DD only wants to be worn on my back or on my side in the ring sling!

  • Not all babies want to be worn once they get bigger.  You may just have to accept that. I know it's nice for hands-free time, but your LO might prefer being in a bouncy seat or on the floor with toys while you do dishes or riding in the cart while you get groceries etc. instead.  Sometimes, you just have to go with their preferences.

Your LO may not like the moby if it's getting warm near you. The moby is heavy material. A woven wrap may be a better option. The 7 Slings don't adjust, so again, it may just not be fitting your baby the right way. I'd recommend a ring sling in lieu of a 7 Sling.

Either way... when you put LO in the carrier, do you immediately start moving? S never liked to be in a carrier unless I bounced/rocked/danced her a bit when she was getting settled.

This is all true also! My DD hates to be confined but loves to be carried around. As long as we are moving she is ok. If you need more info on the different types of carriers you can check out www.thebabywearer.com there are lots of great ladies on there that are very helpful and can help you find the solution for your individual situation. Sorry if I came across preachy before. It was only meant to be helpful. =) Good luck!

  • Oh I just realized you are from Jax! Me too!  Although I live in Ga now. Yeah the heat there in the Moby is killer. Try a woven or a gauze wrap! =) What part of Jax are you in?
