Cradle cap

DD has a very small amount of cradle cap and I was just wondering what you use to treat it. DD1 had it when she was a baby and the pedi said to use Selsom Blue(sp). That was a long time agot so I didnt know if you are still suppose to use it or something else instead. Thanks!!

When my DD had it I just used regular shampoo everyday and combed really well. It went away very easily and quickly.  Once it was gone we went back to using shampoo every 2-3 days.  Good Luck

  • DD had it for a while, and I heard to just wait it out, but it just never went away.  We tried Olive Oil and it did a little bit, but not much.  Then I waited for a couple of months and eventually bought California Baby Calendula Wash and I used that with a brush to wash her hair really well and it has gone away.  I also did the olive oil before that.  I'm not sure which made it go away, the olive oil, the brush, or the CA Baby, or maybe it was a mixture of the three, but it worked.  She has lots of hair and had it really bad.

  • When he had no hair I would rub vaseline on his head and leave it overnight, then wash his head with a soft brush and shampoo the next day.  I tried to use vaseline now and it was a HUGE MESS.  I bought some Mustela Cradle Cap Shampoo (beware, it smells like a 90 year old woman) and it has helped.  The biggest thing that helps his scrubbing his head with a scrubby brush (it is soft, but not as soft as his infant brush).  They gave it to me in the NICU.  I also brush his scalp often with his infant brush.  When I say "brush" I mean scrub.  It doesn't hurt him and is the only thing that gets the scales off.  It gets quite bad if I don't do this.

We also used the scrubbie from the hospital. I'm about to order some from Amazon because we've used it so much it has broken in half! I also meant scrubbie when I said brush.

  • Evan had cradle cap for the longest time. What worked for us was, I applied baby oil to his head with my finger nails and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then I took a comb and worked out all the scales- so gross. Finally I washed with a teeny buy of anti-dandruff shampoo. Did this for 3 days and it went away.

  • We just washed it as usual, combed it out, and then used Vaseline. We tried baby oil, but it just did not work for DD, so we used the Vaseline, which worked like a charm. Literally, I would put it on her before bed, and by the morning there was a noticeable difference. It was a bit messy like PP said, but still worth it, I think.
  • Swimiz, did you put the vaseline in with her hair?  My LO has hair, not as much as yours, but I feel like I can't really work anything into her hair to get the dry skin on her head.  My LO has some cradle cap but the rest is just dry skin - she has really bad eczema and I think it's related to that.  I don't touch it and we only bathe her 1-2 times per week, and only for ~5 minutes, per the pedi for her eczema.

Yep, I had to put it right in with her hair. I tried to get as much scalp and as little hair as possible but it was inevitable. She hasn't really had any since about 6 months, so her hair wasn't as crazy as it is now, but she did still have quite a bit. I would just push it back and Vaseline away- sometimes getting it in the hair actually helped because then the hair could be pushed back out of the way and stay there.

  • Selson blue. Works like a charm every time.
