I just read on the IF board about OBs/REs liking your TSH to be less than 2 - 2.5 when you're TTC/pregnant, and I grabbed my lab work from my annual last month and my TSH is 3.9. This sounds a lot higher than it was last year (I think it was 1.something) but the normal range on the sheet is .3 - 5.
Should I call about this? Does this sound high for someone TTC?
I just did a quick go ogle search and I'm reading everywhere that for TTC it should be around 2.0 and higher increases your risk of miscarriage. ![]()
Re: anyone have thyroid issues?
Hi...wasn't online yesterday so just read your msg today...but, you are absolutely correct that a high TSH can increase your chance of miscarriage...and that, yes, they like to see it below 2.5. Actually I'm even surprised that if yours is 3.9 that they haven't started to treat you with synthroid...from what I researched the new "standard" is keeping it below 3 (before it was anything below 5).
Before I got released from my RE they tested mine...it was at 2.92...so not above 3 but above that 2.5...so they began me on synthroid (after a few weeks being on it my TSH is now at 0.7 - which to me sounds low but still within normal range - and honestly since being on it I do have more energy and I don't feel like I'm gaining weight so easily anymore).
I looked back on my bloodwork from my annual physicals...when I got pregnant (in only 3 months) with DD mine was at 1.5 (or so)...and it was always in that range...when I started at the RE April 2011 mine was up to almost 1.9...then by last August 2011 mine was at 2.92 (and I do remember gaining weight easily and not losing it - could it have been the stress of IF and treatments, maybe - but I think it had a lot to do with my TSH).
Needless to say I definitely am now wondering if part of the reason why it took IVF to get pregnant is because of my TSH. I have spoken to other women who have said once they got their thyroid levels normal then they got pregnant...and even two women (age of 40 & 43) who both got pregnant once losing a lot of weight both without trying (and I know weight affects TSH)...one did have other issues & suffered a m/c but the other just had her baby boy in March.
Sorry to be so long winded...but I would definitely talk to your RE about it...I'm definitely surprised they haven't already begun treating you to get it in the under 2.5 range.
Good luck!
Yes, I do think it's a problem. You should definitely be treated.
I just had my thyroid panel re-checked, waiting on results. I have anti-thyroid antibodies, so it's probably only a matter of time until my thyroid wears out.
Did you have anti-thyroid antibody levels checked? I would suggest that too.
