We are team green, if this is a girl we will be naming her Madeleine (pronounced 'lean') after my Great-Grandmother. I don't mind the nn Maddie but I know it is extremely popular and I would prefer to use something else.
So the name would be pronounced madd-uh-leen? I've never heard that pronunciation before. I think most any other nickname than Maddie (which I don't like) would be a stretch.
Married to my best friend 6/5/10
BFP #1 9/7/10, EDD 5/14/11, Violet born 5/27/11.
BFP #2 4/9/12, EDD 12/16/12, M/C Rory 4/24/12.
BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.
No matter what NN you call her, friends at school will probably call her Maddie. If you're not okay with that, maybe go with another name. The "lean" pronunciation is new for me, too.

Thanks for the input ladies, I will see what DH thinks of Leena or Leeny.
Any time I have posted about the pronunciation I have gotten that response about people having never heard it before, I guess because that was how my Great-Grandmother pronounced it, it seems completely normal to me, but I also don't think I have ever known anyone else by that name with the same spelling.

we actually nixed it for a FN and moved it to a MN and one reason was because i say it madeLINE, not lynn. and people would never do it right. lol so make sure youre ok with people messing it up all the time

I would have pronounced it -leen. I have always thought that was how it was supposed to be pronounced.
This is our top name and I wonder about about nicknames too. Ours will be spelled the same and pronounced "-len". The wiki article mentioned: Lena, Leni, Leena, Lene.
No new nn ideas but just wanted to say that I love it pronounced that way! Reminds me of Carolina (car-o-leena). Though behindthename lists it for the Madeline spelling. I totally get wanting to honor your great-grandma's spelling though.
why bother with a NN? My name is Theresa and I've never really had a nickname with my family or at school. why can't you just call her Madeleine? It'll be a mouthful in the beginning but she'll get the hang of saying it.
