Linnea?

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this name? I know it's not very common so trying to get a feel for reactions.

Keep in mind our daughter is Anya so we are okay with being a little out of the box.

Isn't that the dark line that you get on your stomach when you're pregnant? That's what it makes me think of. It doesn't sound like a name it sound like a medical term.

Yup Linea nigra. I don't like it at all for a name.

  • There was a post about this a few weeks ago.. see if you can find it.

It's a beautiful scandinavian name, and I don't think it is that uncommon. There is a popular series of children's books called Linnea's Garden.

Linea negra is pronounced differently, and in any case, most people on the planet (other than us bumpsters) are unaware of this term.

Love the Anya and Linnea sibset.

  • I absolutely love this name! I think it's beautiful and I didn't think that linea nigra when I saw it. Mostly because I've known women named this and have always thought it was a pretty name.

  • First thing that comes to mind is TLC's Say Yes To The Dress: Atlanta. There always seems to be a bride or bridesmaid named Linnea on that show.

I think it's okay. Love Anya!

Linea negra was the first thing that came to mind.

It isn't my favorite. I just hear the latin word for "line" which is where linea nigra, linear, the astronomy term for lines on planets (lineae) and so many other "line" words come from. I know the Swedes use it to mean the linden flower, but I think anyone who is not Swedish and works in science, law, or medicine will make the same connection due to the abundance of latin terms with the "linea" root.

  • Love.  It is both my mom and grandma's middle name.

Anyone who told the above poster it sounds "ghetto" is probably just ignorant of its origin and thinks it sounds made up.  It's a Swedish name, and I'm guessing the vast majority of American women named "Linnea" are white Midwesterners.  Definitely not ghetto.

  • Linnea is on our short list for if we ever have a girl. It's a family name for DH, and would honor my mom's MN, Lynn.

    I love it.

  • I am okay with Linnea (or however you want to spell it), but I don't think it goes well with Anya. It is too similar sounding IMO.

I thought of this too. I knew this term well before the bump. I don't know how to pronounce the name but if it's in a country where it's uncommon people might confuse it. (and not know how to pronounce it)

I love it and it sounds great with Anja! It also reminds me of the book Linnea's Garden. The book brings back fond memories of my Grandparents who gave me the book. I have very positive associations with the name. Beautiful choice IMO.
