What type of beans

If you have given your LO beans did you just get them from a can? If not, how did you buy them. I now they sell dried ones but I have never prepared that kind. I am trying to go the healthiest route and figure canned beans are packed with sodium. Any suggestions would be great!

Re: What type of beans

  • We tried canned black beans first and DD LOVES them.  So I bought a bag of dried.  I soaked them over night, rinsed them in the morning and put them in my crock pot with about 2 inches of water on top and cooked on low for 8 hours.  Then I put them in ice cube trays with some water and froze them into cubes.  When I want to give them to DD I just pop on in the microwave for 30 seconds.  Works great, cheaper and less sodium then the canned ones.  Plus I was wasting a bunch of the can because I would get rid of them after a few days.

  • She loves all types of beans.  We've tried canned black beans, veggie refried beans, baked beans, kidney beans so far.  She's a huge fan!

DS is a huge fan of lentils.  I just make my own and they don't need to be soaked and are one of the least gass producing beans :)  Plus I like them too so we can share :)

  • We feed DS La Preferida beans, they have pinto, black, and chick peas that are all organic.  They come in canned or bagged and are soaked longer than other companies which makes them softer-nice for babies! They have organic refried beans as well!

It's a family owned business in Chicago, so it's in a ton of stores around here but you should be able to find it in Walmart, Target I think.  Are you in FL? I believe you can find them in Publix

I usually give her plain hummus.  I spread it on whole wheat pita and she pretty much sucks the hummus off and I "reload"

  • So, this may be a dumb question, but are whole beans a choking hazard? We were out with my parents and I was feeding DS from my plate as usual. Before I gave him the beans, my dad said he thought they would be the perfect size to block little airways and I got nervous.

I cook with beans and chick peas a lot, so I really want to give them to DS! Has anyone had a problem? Do you do anything special?

We haven't had a problem.  They are pretty soft.  DD has no issues with them, sometimes the skins will get stuck in her mouth but other then  that she's fine with them.

Black beans I give whole, but pinto beans I usually cut in half since they're bigger.  But we haven't had any issues.

We did canned black beans last night, and they were a hit. We also tried pinto beans a while back, but DD wasn't all that interested. She's also had refried beans, but I think they were a little to "thick" for her taste, and she kind of gagged on them.
