need advice - hsg & root canal (fun!)

I am having an hsg on Friday so we're feeling optimistic about our chances of conceiving in the next few months.  This is good since we've been at this for 2 years and are planning to "move on" (as much as that is possible) if we're not pregnant by the end of summer.  I'm 41 and DH is 40 so it seems like this may be our last best chance.

The problem is, my dentist just told me I need to have a root canal due to an infection.  There isn't any pain (yet) or swelling so I'm not really worried about the tooth so I planned on putting it off until summer vacation in 6 weeks.

So, I'm not sure what to do  . . . can you get a root canal when you're pregnant?  How long can I put it off (on the distant chance I get pregnant, can I wait another 12 weeks until my 2nd trimester?) or should I just hurry up and do it?

Sorry so long. . . I've been chasing all of this around in my head all week and I'm so excited for the hsg and the possibilities but I'm really annoyed by the timing of the root canal.

TIA

  • NO!  I absolutely would not.  Not unless it was an emergency and there was no way of avoiding it. Dental work can sometimes result in serious bacterial infections.   Do it before you are pregnant if there is any way possible.

If you already have an infection, you should definitely take care of that right away. It might not be causing you problems now, but it's possible the infection can spread and you don't want that while you're pregnant! Good luck.

  • Agreed with the pp...that's not something you want to put off. I had to have some dental work done during my first pregnancy. They told me it was less risky to do the work than it was to leave an infection unchecked because the infection could potentially harm the baby. Don't risk it...
  • I agree with the other women, get it done before you are pregnant.  Dental infections are too serious a risk for the baby.  I had to have an infected wisdom tooth removed while pregnant.  I would rather have had it done before hand.  There are so many things that go along with it that you don't want during pregnancy either - like x-rays, antibiotics, and pain meds.

  • Thanks Ladies!

I'm a huge baby when it comes to dental work and am not crazy about my current dentist (she yelled at me!) so I'm going to a new dentist tomorrow morning for a 2nd opinion and if needed, will schedule my root canal right away.

I sort of knew what I had to do - just wishing it would magically go away.  :(
