Re: How long did you take painkillers for?

  • I took oxycodone for 2 days in the hospital with motrin 600 regulary. When I got home I took half a pain killer for maybe 2 days, they made me too out of it. I take motrin on occasion but never more than one a day.

  • You are fine , just make sure to eat with it. I had to stop taking percocet because my whole trunk was covered in hives, it really really sucked. They wanted to give me steriods to help it go away, but then I wouldn't be able to breast feed so I just suffered. I'm still taking Ibuprofen all the time. DS likes kicking me as hard as he can right in my c/s scar and it really hurts. It also helps take the edge off so I can be more productive running all around the house cleaning. DS is a month and I'm still taking the ibuprofen, but not on a set schedule, just when I feel like I need it.

  • Send home from the hospital with percocet and IBU, on my third refill of percocets.  I'm taking only one percocet a day in the evening before bed.  My hips are killing me after delivering my 10pounder, I sprained all the ligaments in my pelvis and possibly fractured my tailbone.  I have started feeling better at 4 weeks pp, but I still hurt and healing.  Hopefully you feel better soon!

I did the motrin thing for two and a half weeks... then I forgot a few doses and have been pretty much ok with out... I'll take one here and there, but not 600mg doses 4x a day anymore!

About a week. While in the hospital, I was on Percocet and Motrin, and after I came home, I took 800 mg of advil 4 times a day for a few days. I wasn't happy about the percocet (but I needed it), but I am very comfortable with NSAIDs.
  • I never took anything like percocet. I only took otc motrin after delivery and once we got home I took it for about 2-3 weeks.. I had a bad tear but I didn't feel like I needed anything stronger. Everyone in my family was amazed they didn't send me home with anything stronger.

I am still taking the ibuprofen about once a day, they gave me Tylenol 3 too which I swear made LO super tired so I stopped taking it.

  • I had a c-section on 4/23 and got 600 mg ibuprofen and tylenol 3. I just went off the tylenol 3 last night (I figured enough codeine! and that I can go without it) - and am still on ibuprofen. Judging by my pain level, I think I will probably be on the ibuprofen for another week or so.

Make sure you take the drugs with some food, you should be fine and won't mess up your stomach. If you are in pain, don't short yourself and make sure you have adequate support. I know now from my recent experience that the postpartum period is hard enough without pain - if you need the dugs, take them!

I was alternating Oxycodone and Tyelenol while in the hospital.  I asked to be taken off the Oxy before I left the hospital as narcotics cause constipation....since I had a 4th degree tear, I didn't want anything to make #2s harder than they were already going to be.   At home I was then alternating ibuprofin and tylenol for about 10 days.   At this point (3 wks out) I take an occasional ibuprofin, but nothing on a regular basis.

  • I had no idea they give out Oxy and Percocet for vaginal deliveries. My first was a c-section and I stopped the Oxy the day I left the hospital because I didn't like the wait it made me feel and just took Motrin afterwards. I should have asked for something else because I was literally shaking in pain at my follow up appts with the lactation clinic. With my VBAC they sent me and my 2nd/3rd degree tears home a few hours after the birth without a word about meds. It wasn't until late the day after I delivered that I was like "hey wait a minute i went med free but i can take Motrin!". Damn hippy birth center midwives, of course they wouldn't offer narcotics but I never would have known to ask :-).

  • I took Vicodin for the first 10 days after my c-section plus ibuprofen 800  3x a day. After that, I was taking ibuprofen 2x a day for about another week. Now I take the ibuprofen as needed, usually once in the middle of the day. I should say that I am doing a ton of walking so that's probably why I am still so sore.
