Breastfeeding

Does anyone know if aspartame crosses into breast milk?

I avoided aspartame during my pregnancy (personal decision...I know most say it is safe). Im now nursing and started drinking diet coke again. I can't find any good source of info on if aspartame crosses into breast milk. Kelly mom says it's safe (only minimal amounts make it into the milk), but I have found some other alarming stuff online that says it is not (basically saying aspartame does cross into milk and can cause lots of neurological/health issues for baby). Thought I would check here to see if anyone could clarify for me.

  • I was wondering the same thing, as for all artificial sweeteners. I'm also curious about things applied to your skin, see my cellulite cream post below. If they were supposed to be avoided during pregnancy because of it passing through the placenta, I can't imagine it would be a good idea while breast feeding either. My mom told me everything gets into your breast milk and now I am really paranoid about it!

  • It should be fine, if you want to drink diet coke go ahead. Breastmilk passes very small amounts of any type of 'chemical'.
