C-sections

Can you wear your contacts during a planned c-section?

DS is breech and while I'm actively working to get him to flip with chiropractor, acupuncture and spinning babies, I'm also trying to mentally prepare for a c-section, which would be at 39 weeks.

A random thought popped into my head about the c-section today. Do they allow you to wear your contacts? Is every hospital different in their policy on this? I absolutely HATE my glasses and I would also rather just be blind and wear nothing than have them on during the surgery. But then obviously I wouldn't be able to see LO after he's born. Maybe I could just wear my contacts and not mention anything? LOL.

    Yeah, every hospital is different.

I wore mine and was never asked about them, but my c/s was unplanned. Still...I don't see what the big hubbub is. I say wear 'em.

  • Mine was emergency c/s but I was able to keep mine in.  I had actually asked if there was an issue with contacts before c/s was even a thought and they said they want mom to be able to see everything so there is no needs to take them out unless you want to.  That said, I'm sure every hospital is different.

  • I'm just guessing that the issue would be if you have to be "put under"...

  • I asked my doctor and he said yes.  I'm guessing it depends on hospital policy.
  • All of the literature they handed me about having a c-section at my hospital said no contacts, but when the day finally came I just wore them and no one asked (eventhough it was on my file that I wore them). I hardly ever wear my glasses and they're so old and scratched up I wouldn't be able to see well with them on anyway. I would've put up a major fight if they asked me to take my contacts out! I sleep/nap with them in all the time with no issues.

  • I had mine in and the doctor said it was fine.  And it was the same policy for a planned c-section and emergency one.  Good luck!

  • I wore mine during both of my boys' planned c/s's, and am planning to again with DD.

  • I wore mine for my planned c-section. I have no clue about my first c-section because I labored for 28 hours first so my memory is pretty foggy :) I say just wear them and don't bring it up unless they ask you!

  • I was able to wear mine.  I think you may hear differently depending on the anesthesiologist - but I was told that because I was just getting a spinal block, as opposed to general anesthesia, that I could wear mine.

  • Mine was unplanned and no one asked me about my contacts or told me to take them out so they stayed in. They put me under without any problems.

The Nest/Bump sucks and won't let me change my location. I'm in Arkansas, not Florida.
  • Mine was unplanned, but wasn't an emergency. They made me take my contacts out. I hated it because I also couldn't wear my glasses, so I felt a little blind.

No one ever mentioned anything about them to me so I wore mine.  I wore glasses most of the rest of the time in the hospital because our schedule was so weird (up every few hours to breastfeed, back and forth to the NICU, etc.).

Mine wasn't planned, but hours before the nurse went through a check list & that was on the list of things I had to remove (along with earring & my rings) incase I ended up with a c/s. Since I was laboring overnight I had already taken them out anyway.

  • No one ever asked about contacts, so I was able to wear mine throughout.  I'm so glad or I wouldn't have been able to see my DS.
