Can they use the foley after SROM?

My water broke this morning, so I'm "on the clock" now. I'm not having any contractions yet though. I should have asked when they were checking to see if my water really had broken, but if I'm not dilated to 3, could they start with he foley bulb before going to pitocin? I would hope that would help jumpstart things in a non-medicated way. I have no idea how dilated I am now (my MW didn't check this morning), I was only 1cm 70% effaced at 36 weeks & have declined checks since then. So I know that if I'm over 3cm it won't matter, but my midwives aren't on call tonight so I'd like to have a very slow progression once I have to go back to the hospital tonight, and hope my MW can deliver me in the morning!

Re: Can they use the foley after SROM?

  • They used a foley bulb on me after my cervix started swelling. It's all a little hazy, but I think it was about 8 hours after my water broke on its own.

Yes, but the purpose of a foley bulb is to ripen the cervix- like you said- if you're already 3 it wouldn't help. what you need is contractions. do some nipple stimulation & walk your butt off. good luck!
