Toddlers: 24 Months+

Any 2+ year olds still rear facing?

DD turns 2 on Sunday. The articles say that toddlers should stay rear facing as long as the car seat allows. According to my car seat, DD can remain rear facing until she hits 40 lbs!? She is on 24.5 lbs now. I plan on asking the doctor's opinion/advice at her appointment on Monday... but my inclination is to leave her rear facing as long as possible (at least as her legs allow). Has anyone else left their LO rear facing past the age of 2? How long to plan on keeping your LO rear facing?

Thanks!

DS is 3.5 so he's FF now, but was RF until about 2y9m.  He's still well under 40 pounds, but we switched him because he was getting too tall--his head was at the top of the seat.  Otherwise we would have kept him RF.

  • Yes, he's still RF, will be until he meets the limits of the carseat. When his head is 1 inch from the top of the shell he will have to be FF, so probably another 4-6 months I'd guess.

  • My DD is still rear facing at almost 3. I may switch her this summer because I think an infant car seat will fit better in my car if she is FF. I am a little nervous about it though! I don't see any reason to turn your DD FF, she doesn't know any different and seems like she has a while to go before her seat would require you to switch her!

  • Yes, DD1 is still RF at 26 months. Our plan is to keep her RF until she's 3, provided she doesn't outgrow it by height first.

  • yes, still RF and i get questioned about it a lot lately (like keeping her RF is a bad thing?!). she was 35 inches and 26 pounds 4 months ago. she has to bend her legs to sit but that's not an issue- it's if their head is an inch from the top or the weight. we still have a while before she reaches these limits, i think.

  • DS is 2 and still RF. Our seat goes to 35 lbs RF but since he's only 26 lbs. I'm sure he'll be too tall for it before he's too heavy. We plan on keeping him RF until he's too tall for the seat, pending any unforeseen circumstances.
  • DD is almost 2 and still RF without any problems so I will keep her that way for the foreseeable future. She doesn't seem to mind it and she has a mirror so she can see me. I haven't really thought about it but will probably keep her that way until she outgrows it.

  • DD is still RFing.  Ultimately I'll turn her FF when she hits the height (within 1 in of top of shell) and/or weight limits of her seat.  Based on the fact that she's pretty petite I think she'll definitely be RFing until 3 and I'm hoping I can keep her RFing until 4.  I don't see any reason to turn her since she has no issues riding RFing and it's safer.

  • DD is still RFing. We're planning to keep her that way until her 4th birthday in September. I figure she still fits (she's on the smaller side) and isn't uncomfortable or complaining, so why turn her around, you know?
  • I would guess she will be RFing until 2.5 or 3.  We turned DS at 2 exactly because he was 34 pounds at his appt. and our seat limit is 35.  DD is only 24 pounds and almost 2.  I am in no rush.  I loved the preschool dad buckling his 2 year old into a booster seat and side-eyeing me putting DD in RFing.  Who puts a 2 year old in a booster????

  • Still RF here, I will turn him when he outgrows his seat. Probably within the next six months, I think.

DD is still RF. She's nowhere near the weight max for the seat, and she has a couple more inches to reach the height max. I'm not sure what you mean about her legs allowing. DD has to bend her knees to fit in the seat, but it's still much safer so I'm leaving her RF as long as possible.

  • My son just turned 2 last month and we plan to keep him rear-facing for a long time.  My husband thinks it's too hard to get him in & out and thought he would be happier forward-facing, so I agreed to talk to the pedi about it at his 2 year appointment.  She agreed with me that it is best to keep him rear-facing as long as possible so now my husband is on board with it.  My son is in the 3rd & 5th percentiles for height & weight so he has a long time to go.  Our pedi said especially with his small size it is best to keep him rear-facing.

I'm not sure that we will go until we hit the rear-facing limits on the seat because our seat has high limits and with his size he could be pretty old before he hits the limits.  I have no plans to take him to kindergarten rear-facing, but I do plan to keep him rear-facing until he is at least 3, probably longer.

It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

We did as a long a possible, but DS's long legs didn't allow it for long. I think we ended up having to turn him right after his 2nd bday. If he wasn't so leggy, we'd probably still have him rear facing.

  • We turned my DD around a month after she turned 3. She was 37.5 inches at her 3 year appt. and 28 pounds. I wanted her seat for #2 and decided to buy a FF only chair for her. She was comfortable RFing

  • DD is still RF.  I don't foresee switching her for awhile.  She's petite.  Smile

DS was turned 3 weeks after his 2nd birthday.  He was within an inch from the top.   He was 37.5" and 27 lbs at his 2 year well check.  Even if he wasn't at the height limit, we may have needed to turn him so that we could put the seats next to each other and still have room for me to sit in the back (I have a large sedan).

  • Yes!  LO is RF until he hits the max on my carseat which is 35lbs.  He's only 29.5 now so we have a way to go.  He's 2 and 4 months.  They will outgrow the height/weight limit before legs become an issue!

  • DD is 28 pounds and 27 months and is still rearfacing. We'll turn her around when her head is too close to the top of the seat, but will stay rf as long as possible.

  • DD2 will be three in Feb and she is still RFing- she is about 27 pounds and the limit for her seat is 40.  She will probably outgrow the seat by height before weight (she only has a bout 2 inches until the top, and the limit is 1 inch below the top), I've considered getting a taller convertible to keep her RFing longer, she just seems to tiny to be FFing.
