We're starting to think about #2, so I'm revisiting my list. Oona has always been at the top of that list, though I've gone back and forth over whether I like the Oona or Una spelling better (at the moment, Oona). DH likes names like Lucy, Molly, Lily, etc., though he has conceded that Luna might be nice.
There are plenty of other names I like ? I could name a Duggarful of girls ? but Oona is the one I love. DH isn't 100% set against it, but he would need to be convinced. Before I put the effort into an aggressive subliminal messaging campaign, I thought I'd gather some outside opinions.
What do you think of Oona? Too weird? Ugly? Regal? Too faerie-ish? We have a boring English last name (think Tomkins), but my family is Argentine-Italian and we'd probably use a family middle name from my side.
Re: Oona
The other spelling is Oonagh, which is even worse!

I think Oonagh is better than Oona, IMO.
But I think Luna would be a good compromise, given the other names listed.
ITA.
My niece's middle name is Una.
I actually know an Oonagh and think it is better than Oona, but I don't care for either.

This was what I was going to say
I hear it and think of the bubble guppies.
this is Oona:
edit b/c the pic was massive.
Thanks for this ? I was unaware!

I think Luna is a good compromise.
I do know one little Oona, though.
Well, now that you brought this up. We will never be able to use this for any future children. It's DD's favorite show. She would think her little sister is a guppy.
my 1st reply seems really (b)itchy to me - I didn't mean for it to be. Sorry about that!
and I probably wouldn't have thought of bubble guppies if #1 didn't veto Molly b/c that's a bubble guppy, too. The girls watch it at my grandparents and apparently love it - they've never asked to watch it at home - so I looked up the show after being told "you can't name a baby after a tv person!"
Joke's on her, I fell in love with her name b/c of a tv show/character.

I agree, you should go with Luna
"Una" in italian and spanish is the article "a/an" so hearing Una Gianna or Una Carmen is like hearing An Elizabeth or A Mary.. not really nice
Yes, I know. I am reasonably fluent in Spanish (less so in Italian). But in addition to the article, una also has the flavor of "unity/one-ness," which is why Edmund Spenser gives the name Una to the character who embodies Truth/Unity in The Faerie Queene.
Since our family is multi-ethnic, we're always looking for names that can do double-duty, and Oona has some potential in that vein. It has long roots in the British Isles, woven through the fairy queen folktales, but hints at a Latin root that invokes harmony and wholeness. I don't think anyone who actually speaks Spanish or Italian would mistake Oona for an article any more than an English speaker would mistake "Anne Elizabeth" for "an Elizabeth."

That's what I was going to say. It's NMS, but if you like it, use it.
I am from Venezuela (spanish is my first language) with italian parents and I've been living in Italy for the past 8 years, so I speak both, perfectly, and when I hear Oona (which is said just like "una" in both languages) the first thing that comes to mind is the article
I'm sorry if I ticked you in any way but you asked for honest opinions and mine is that this is a bad name, sorry.. again
No, no offense. I appreciate your perspective and input.
I just thought that it was funny that you used "an Elizabeth" as an example of how Oona Xxx would sound in English, when, in fact, Ann Elizabeth is a perfectly fine English name that causes no confusion.
A better analogy might be a name like Inna that sounds like an English preposition or article, but isn't. I know several Russian/Slavic women named Ina/Inna, and, while it might sound a little strange to an English speaker at first, I don't really think anyone is genuinely confused.

Actually, I was just thinking about this more and realized that all the family names in the running for the mn spot just happen to be adjectives or substantive adjectives (Modesta, Clementina, G@lnt3, etc.), but I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse!
ETA: Don't worry, though. I am not actually crazy enough to name a real child Una Clementina. Though, if I get as much morphine in the delivery room as I did last time around, I can't be held responsible for any last-minute, hilarious decisions I might make.

This baby will be Luna if it's a girl. Use that.
Oona looks really silly to me. I guess I prefer Una, but it still looks incomplete.
Can't say I approve. I expected you to go all-out with the Anne of Green Gables connections! Congrats on your new little one.

Doesn't anyone do crossword puzzles here? Oona is a common answer in them. The question -- who is Charlie Chaplin's wife? Chaplin's granddaughter, also named Oona, is an actress in Game of Thrones.
I like it, I've always thought it was an Irish name, but I see it has a few different cultural backgrounds. I know a ten yr old named Oona, she is adorable.
Oona--def nms
Luna--I know about 4 horses named Luna so it has that connotation to me
Haha!
Maybe if I was a huge AoGG fan, but the girls' names are just coincidence.
