In my family we have our own sizing for baby clothes. On my side we have big babies so we have our own sizing for baby clothes. I was wondering if any of you 2+moms have your own sizing that you go by and if any of the ftm have been going on their own intuitions or by the size on the clothes. I went shopping with a friend who just found out she is expecting and was explaining this to her because I called my mom to recap what size we had decided my baby would be in around Christmas time (gotta love the winter clearance). My friend was thinking baby would be in 3-6months but because I know from being around babies my entire life that was not the case. So, how who has their own sizing they follow and what do you follow by?
Every baby is different. DD was in 9 Month clothes around 4 months, but now at 16 Months she can still fit in a few of her 9 Month and 12 Month clothes. Crazy, right? I just buy what looks like it will fit her, with no attention to the actual "month" sizing.
So much depends on the baby. I was told by everyone not to buy newborn sized clothes because LO wouldn't fit in them. She was born at 7lbs 12oz and lived newborn clothes until she was 1mo and then went to 0-3.
LO was a chunky monkey at first so she wore bigger sizes. Now she weighs less, yet is really tall, so it's a challenge to find something that fits.
Clothes shopping for little ones is definitely tough!
It depends on the baby and brand. ON and Gap run big. Gerber clothes/onesies are terrible IMO. Circo (target) run small so I buy up.
I disagree, maybe it's different for boys. ON runs small and Gap is a little better but still on the small side. Children's Place fits true to size. Gerber is just terrible, don't buy.
My kids came home from the hospital in 3m clothing (not even 0-3) and were wearing 6m shortly after. I'd say they were in 9m clothing at 3-4m old and were in 24m/2T by 9m.
They do tend to level off a bit once they start crawling and, especially, walking (so DD is almost 2 and is just moving up to 3T after being in 2T for over a year.)
Every baby is different, so you take a chance of buying that clearance stuff and having it not fit at all.
DD has always been pretty spot on for the sizing in every brand except Gerber (yea, they suck and are ridiculously small).
Carter's, Circo and anything Walmart are usually easy to judge and she has been able to wear Baby Gap long after their sizes are marked, but still fit in her monthly size even if it's a little big.
I think it stinks more for moms of boys because you can't extend the sizing as easily. DD wore a ton of her summer dresses into the fall last year because I could pair them with cheap leggings and cardigans, so even if they were big, I could make them work.
ETA: DD is also 50% across the board for weight and height, so maybe sizing is actually based on something?
DD was always ahead of her clothes...but she was in the >97% in height and weight until she hit 15months...now she's actually on the charts. She also has a long torso, so her tops were always ahead of her bottoms. Right now she's in 3T tops and 2T bottoms (most of the time).
I had to guess and play it by ear the whole first year with Sophie (she is 1 now). I didn't buy too many clothes ahead of time because she didn't always go through growth spurts at exactly the same time as everyone else. She was also very small at birth 5lbs 3oz so while she was wearing preemie clothes, others babies her age were 0-3. Now, at 1 yr, she is wearing 18month clothes while some LOs her age are still in 12month. Their growth is so unpredictable. It wasn't till about 6months that I was really able to predict when we would move her to the next size.
Also, many of the brands run smaller or larger. When she was wearing NB (most brands) clothes she was also wearing 3month gerber. The next size up in Gerber was always our transition brand because they run a bit smaller.
ds was true to size for just a few months & then he's mainly been 1 size bigger. he's not a big baby per se, but clothes shrink a lot & with footed pjs, they're usually too small on his big feet.

This. DD has always been 20% or below for weight and 90+% for length. She is 13 months old and still fits in 6-9 month clothes. My only problem is getting her pants long enough that actually stay up on her waist.

My nieces are teeny tiny and are the only kids in my family who were ever wearing said sizes during said ages.
I picked up some clearance summer outfits for next summer in an 18mo, and picked up some fleece sleep n play things in 6mo for this winter.
Watch, now we're going to have a teeny tiny baby....
