Potty Training

Anyone have a 3+yr old who's still training?

I feel like the only mom whose 3 year old isn't fully trained yet. DS will go for 3-4 days where he's great - no accidents, takes himself to the potty or tells me he has to ge etc. Then all of a sudden he'll have 2-3 days where he'll have multiple accidents a day, especially if he's in the middld of doing something fun. He still refuses to poop on the potty and still wakes up in a soaked pull up in the am. I"ve tried every meathod under the sun and I'm not buying the "he's not ready" argument b/c he goes days without accidents. We've done sticker charts, M&Ms, etc and nothing seems to work long term. At this point I'm at a loss.

DS is still resistant to any amount of training so no, youre not alone!

  • DS1 is 3.5 and I'm just beginning to think that potty training might actually be working. He still sleeps in a diaper- I'm focusing on daytime right now, I'll worry about night when he's mastered day.

We just had to be consistent. We tried everything, too. Naked at home seemed to work the best (and was a last resort.) :(

Hang in there. I just kept telling myself that there are very few college kids in diapers. (I was starting to think he'd never potty train.) ;)

  • I was just coming here to see if I was the only one with a three year old who isn't potty trained yet, so good to know.  My son starts preschool in August and has to be potty trained, so I'm a little stressed out.  He cries and whines every time I have to take him away from playing.  He hates being naked, so I have a ton of big boy underwear, so I use those during the day.  I set timers, ask constantly and I'm having no luck with him.  In my opinion, potty training is very hard and I wish I could pay someone to take over for me.  :-(

DS is 3.5 and yours are way ahead of him considering he hasn't even made it into the potty yet, except for a few times last summer.  I wish I could pay someone to do it for me too.

  • Yes! My daughter just turned 3 last week and she's still not there yet. I've tried going cold turkey with "big girl panties", tried candy, etc. and it's still slow going. #1 is easier than #2. She knows she isn't supposed to use the potty in her big girl panties, but if she's preoccupied she forgets and goes in them anyway. She's just too focused on fun to care about potty training! Haha!

  • DS is three on the 7th and still not totally trained. We've got daytime pretty much dialed, it's just nighttime that's proving to be the bigger challenge. We're not stressing too hard about it, he still wakes up with a soaked diaper and often wets through but we don't make a big deal and just try again the next night. If you're like us and have probs with leaky pull ups, a Brolly Sheet on top of their mattress is great for containing soaks and minimises mid night drama.

I read on BC that 50% of three year olds still aren't trained by 3, do you ladies think that's accurate? I actually expected DS to train earlier because he's been in cloth since a newborn, but it seems that the whole "cloth helps them to potty train sooner" is a misnomer in our case.

My 3.5 year olds are a work in progress and not even close to done. Its been a long painful process. Part of the problem is that I cant stay in the house for days at a time. I dont have help and need to get to stores and errands. They have been given/promised every kind of reward imaginable (we're up to an IPAD). I'm hoping it just clicks one day soon.
  • We really "started" this past weekend - Leah turned 3 at the end of June.  She has had a lot of sucessful potty trips BUT that is because she is spending a lot of time sitting on the potty!  She hasn't yet made the connection between feeling the urge to go & getting to the potty, kwim?  If she is playing & has to go, she just releases.

We are on preschool deadline so hopefully she makes the connection soon!

Don't worry about nighttime.  Everything I've read/heard said that physiologically, some kids aren't able to make it through the night until 4 - 6 years.  It could be due to their kidney function (not a bad thing) or if they are a heavy sleeper.  If you are good during the day, I call that sucessfully PT'd!  Smile

  • This board made me feel a lot better. I, too, was starting to believe I have the only three year old on the planet who isn't fully potty trained. Boys are typically harder to train than girls is all I've been told, but toddlers can be stubborn. Some days DS does really well, and he'll go both #1 and #2 on the potty with no issues. Some days, he just doesn't care and decides to go in his undies. We have been putting him in undies during the day and putting him on the potty every 30 minutes. It's a little harder now, because I'm on bed rest and really can't be getting up every 30 minutes to make sure he goes to the potty. My husband has a timer set though when he's home for every 30 minutes.

An issue we're having is that my son's dad hasn't even tried to potty train him and my dad who was babysitting him on Saturdays while I was at work wasn't trying either. His dad texted me in a panic today because he said my son was "hysterical" when he put him on the potty, and he didn't want to "force him" to go and have him "be nervous" about it. If he had put him on the potty prior, he wouldn't throw a fit. He spent a week at my dad's while we were on our honeymoon, and he threw a pretty big fit about going on the potty when we got back.

  • I too have a 3 year old who's resistant. Today was a very rough day, he went all morning for Daddy while I was at work, then when I came home, he refused to go for me. He's signed up for preschool at the end of August- they're not required to be potty trained, but I would feel better if he was- he'd could spend time learning not running to the potty. The thought of telling him he can't go to PreK breaks my heart (only child so he loves being around other kids).

Frustrating. I just read the 3 day method & I'm not sure that would be a positive method for him either. Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to stay home for 3 days straight.
Patience I suppose. Good luck everyone!
