Cloth Diapering

rashes in sposies versus rashes in CD

I bought prefolds/fitteds/covers for DD but have not used them.  My plan was to get passed the baby blues and feeding difficulties and then start with the CD, plus I waited until she was born to buy them since we were team green.

DD has a slight rash around her rectum (looks more like a square than a ring), despite using A&D with 75% of changes since the day we came home (she didn't have a rash then it was just for protection).  I change her with every feed so that is 2.5hrs during the day and 4 hours at night.  I have now been using LuSa Booty Balm, Grandma El's, and A&D alternately but it is only getting worse.  Could be an allergy ring, maybe!?  Dairy makes me feel nauseated, DS had eczema as a baby and got allergy rings when he started eating yogurt as a 1 yr old so allergy is a possibility.  I will probably get some desitin just in case since i am still using sposies.  If it is NOT an allergy ring, then do you think it will be better with CDs?  Did CDs help minimize your LOs diaper rashes?  We are a family with very sensitive skin and we always had to use A&D with changes for DS as he got rashes frequently when his butt was not protected (we did not CD him).

Re: rashes in sposies versus rashes in CD

  • Which sposies are you using? We used Pampers sensitive and A&D with every change, and that worked well. Now that she is older, and the sensitive diapers are not available in her size, she does get  a rash when she uses sposies. I think the rash should clear up with the CDs, or you can try changing her more often. I did remove dairy from my diet and all the other recommended things as a precaution.
  • DD had the allergic ring when we started her on whole milk. The best way to describe it is that the area all around the rectum is really, really red. It's like the skin is red, not so much a rash. Just watch out that there aren't any little red pimply bumps, then you could have a yeast issue.

If it is a rash, try a lot of naked bum time (babies love it!) and a little bit of baking soda in her bath. I also found when DD had a bad rash that zinc oxide creams work best. I would also try cloth. I've always found that DD's rashes are worse when she's in a sposie. If you're going to continue using zinc oxide creams for a bit just get some fleece liners to protect your diapers.

I would also try eliminating dairy from your diet, it can't hurt!

  • My DD had a rash from the time we came home from the hospital until we put her in CDs.  Her rash cleared up within two diapers changes once we switched.  It wouldn't hurt to try switching her to see what happens.  Good luck!
