Baby Names

Does Everly sound like a "made-up" name?

Also, what are your thoughts on:

Genevieve-  Is it too long for a little girls name?

Phoebe- Do you automatically think Buffay? Or Halliwell? (For Friends and Charmed fans)

Just throwing a few more out there.

Re: Does Everly sound like a "made-up" name?

  • Why would Genevieve be too long? It's 3 syllables, like Abigail or Jennifer.

Phoebe does always remind me of Friends, unfortunately.

Everly is NMS at all, I think the "last name-like" first name trend is so overdone.

Love Genevieve, Everly is ok but too trendy for my tastes, dislike Phoebe.

Because it's 9 letters long.  I am thinking more of learning to write out her name, something a lot of moms don't think of when naming their kids.  It may seem like a minor detail, but it's fairly important to me.

That being said, DS's name is 7 letters...so I guess it's not that important to meStick out tongue  Gotta love pregnancy brain indecision!

  • I used to think Everly sounded made up, but I hear people talk about it on this board sometimes, so I guess it's not.

Genevieve is NMS, but I don't think it's too long.

Phoebe is an excellent choice!!! I LOVE Phoebe. I don't necessarily think of the Friends character, although DH does and that's why he vetoed it for this baby. I had heard of the name before I had ever seen Friends. I think there's a Magic School Bus character named Phoebe.

I love Genevieve and Phoebe.  Phoebe doesn't remind me of Friends, and I doubt it will remind anyone in you daughter's generation of the show.

I dislike Everly, and I do think it sounds made-up.

    BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.
  • I think Everly does sound made up, but I also kind of like it.

I don't think Genevieve is too long. It's got some cute NN options (Jenny, Evie, Vivi) if it feels too long for a little girl to you (but I think it's fine on it's own)

Phoebe does make me think of Friends and I've never really like the sound of it.

I'm not a fan of Everly. It makes me think "everly after" and it's just Beverly (yuck) with the B chopped off. Trendy. :/

Genevieve is NMS. I've always thought it was too fancy sounding (maybe because it's so long?), but it's not bad. I wouldn't side-eye anyone for it.

Phoebe does make me think of Friends, but seriously for only a second. I like this name, and I don't think the association would even matter/exist if it were the name of an actual baby girl I knew.

I really like Everly. I also like Ever, so that's probably why.

Genevieve-  I don't think it's too long, but you should be aware that is often shortened to Gene by some people.

Phoebe- I like it a lot. I didn't think of Friends until I read another comment that mentioned the show.

I don't exactly understand this logic.  So what if the child has a hard time spelling their name at first?  They'll learn!  I wouldn't not pick something that will last my child's whole life based on a few short weeks of difficulty.  In fact, I kinda like the idea of them having to work a little harder.  Good life skill.

It actually takes kids quite some time to learn how to write their names.  Like I said previously, it's important to me...but not critical.  I don't mind my kid having to work a little harder.  I am a teacher with plans to stay home for the next few years, so I can definately help them.  It's just something I am taking into consideration...but it's not enough to make me rule out the name just yet.

I like them all actually. Genevieve is lovely. I don't mind the friends reference with Phoebe, and Everly is my guilty pleasure name, made up or not.

I don't care for Genevieve.  I like the idea of it, but there's something about it in real life I just can't put my finger on.  And I do like Phoebe, although I automatically think of Smelly Cat. Big Smile

As for Everly....yea....to me it sounds made up.  I know it's a real name and everything, it just feels like there's something missing.

Everly does sound a bit contrived, in my opinion. Furthermore, even though I've heard that name prior to reading The Hunger Games series, I immediately thought of Everdeen (the main character's last name). I'm not saying this would be a common response: merely sharing my first reactions.

There is something about Genevieve that appeals to me, even though it's not my typical naming style, and I think it would make a nice choice.

Also, I like the name Phoebe. Originally, I, too, made that first connection back to "Friends" but then I met a little girl by that name at my daughter's preschool (nicknamed "Bebe" ["bee-bee']). She is so adorable that it replaced that Lisa Kudrow image from my mind.

I suppose that's the way it goes, though, with kids' names: until you really know a child with a particular name, it's difficult to imagine it sometimes.

Is Genevieve pronounced differently if you speak English than the French pronunciation (which has 4 syllables)?

My only experience with the name is a friend used it as her "French name" in French class. When we went to France, she introduced herself as that (instead of her real name for some reason) and the group of teenagers we were talking to all laughed at her and said it was a "grandma" name.

However, I like "grandma" names and I think it's lovely. :) Everly does sound made up to me, but I've been seeing it a lot on here lately, so I'm getting used to it. Phoebe just makes me think of Friends, but honestly, our kids aren't going to be affected by sharing a name with a character from a tv show that was popular over a decade before they were born.

  • Everly doesn't necessarily sound made up, but it's always sounded like a "fantasy" name to me.  Something from a far-off world genre.

Phoebe is okay; I do immediately think of Friends.

I like Genevieve...why would it be too long for a little girl?  You do realize that your little girl is only going to be a little girl for like 10 years of her life, right?

  • Everly makes me think of the Everly brothers and is not attractive as a girl's name in my opinion.

I don't think Genevieve is too long.

I automatically think of Friends but I still like the name Phoebe. My DH doesn't though so I can't use it.

  • Everly does sound made-up to me.

The Americanised Jen-na-veev pronunciation grates on my ears. I love the French- Zhuh-nuh-vee-ev- but I can't deal with the Americanised version.

I like Phoebe the best of the names you mentioned and I don't automatically go to Friends the way I do with Chandler.

Everly is NMS but I think it could be cute.

I dno't think Genevieve is too long and I actually think it is a really cute name that you don't hear everyday.

As for Phoebe, yes those two references came to mind but I say if you like the name, go with it.

Everly makes me think Everdeen as in Catniss from Hunger Games for some reason. Like Genevieve a lot! I don't think it's too long at all especially if you keep MN short.
