3rd Trimester

anyone else have a long torso?

This may sound strange, but I am tallish (5ft8in) and most of my height is in my torso. My mw has told me its good bc it gives the baby lots of room and for that I don't have a gigantic belly. I think it also helps me with other things, as I haven't had much pressure on my lungs or heartburn, and I think its kuz its not putting pressure on my stomach. Any other long-torso ladies out there? Have you have much heartburn?

Re: anyone else have a long torso?

  • I'm 5'11", and still have a RIDICULOUSLY long torso.  I never had any heartburn with my first son, but the downside to having a long torso is that you hide a larger baby well.  DS1 was 10lbs 2oz, delivered vaginally.  My doctor actually apologized to me after the birth that she didn't ever do a weight scan.  I never measured large as far as fundal height goes.  I'm now 37 weeks with DS2, who is also measuring large, but this time we're keeping an eye on him.  At 32 weeks, he measured 7lbs 14oz.

My advice would be to make sure your doctor does a weight scan sometime around 36 weeks!

  • I'm 5'7-1/2" (tallish like you) and I have a long torso.  I've only had heartburn twice and it was after eating spicy foods.  My bump also doesn't look very large because baby has plenty of room in there.

  • I'm 5'10" and have a long torso and have been told that is why I don't show large.  No one believes I'm 7 months pregnant  I haven't had much heartburn but after having it one night I stopped eating a snack before bed or drinking a lot of water before bed.  Of course now I wake up at 4 am hungry and I'm up a 5 am for my first breakfast!

I think having a long torso is a blessing in pregnancy, however the pp describing how it "hid" a larger size baby is something to talk to my OB about!

  • Me! I am 5'11 and have a long torso. I am six months pregnant now, and though I have a pretty decent sized bump, everyone I run into is always commenting I don't look as far along as I am. It kind of bothers me. lol. At first I even worried that baby girl was not growing right, but at my u/s she was right on track. I am hoping not having as big of a belly will make it a little easier to get my pre-baby body back, and maybe spare me the stretch marks (wishful thinking). The only time I get heart burn is when I drink too much water before laying down for bed, but I am thirsty like all the time. It helps if I use an extra pillow to elevate my head a bit. I also don't have the problem of baby stepping on my bladder yet, I know a huge symptom at this point is having to go to the bathroom constantly, But besides my first trimester I haven't had to wake up to go the bathroom at all.
Can't wait to meet my baby girl! Elizabeth Violet is due July 26th, 2012
  • I'm also 5'8'' with a longer torso. I both agree and disagree with your MW. I disagree b/c in all 3 of my pregnancies I have gotten really large bellies. Maybe not as large as a short torso'd woman, to be sure, but certainly large enough to look (and feel) every bit of my 40 weeks. But I agree with her b/c I've also never had heartburn in pregnancy, or been particularly short of breath. Now that I think of it, those could be because of my longer torso.

No that is not true, I am 5'9 and while with my first dd I didn't have much heartburn with this one I have had horrible heartburn from 1st tri till now. I take zantac twice a day just to be able to eat.

For an opposite answer here, I have a really short torso. I am not carrying that large (yet) because I am carrying my baby really far back , but MAN am I all squnched up! I haven't really had heartburn, but my ribs are expanding to make room for my organs and it KILLS. Plus when I sit I feel like my belly gets jammed up into my ribcage and I constantly feel baby kicking my ribs. My 2 sisters have long torsos and I am jealous! I think women with long torsos carry baby weight better and not only have more room for baby + their organs, but also just look cuter pregnant overall. My short waisted self looks like a tomato on stilts!

  • I'm 5'9" and 34 weeks preggo with twins and a long torso.  I am being told that I don't look big for having twins and I do think it's because I have more room in my torso for them, but as far as heartburn I have had HORRIBLE heartburn for the past two months or so.  I am also taking 150mg of Zantac just to sleep.  I think that just depends on where the baby decides to hang out (high or low).

  • I'm 5'7" with a long torso. Everyone says it doesn't look like I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant. I had heartburn maybe twice, once due to laying down right away.

  • I am petite (5'4ish) but most of my height is in my upper body, long torso as well. Have wondered why my lungs haven't been tortured but this makes sense.
  • I'm 5'9" with a long torso and it definitely hides the baby well.  Strangers don't really realize I'm pregnant and when people that do know ask how far along I am, they are often shocked that I'm 7 months.  I do get a lot of heartburn but I've had that issue most of my life no surprise there.

  • I am only 5'4, but have a long torso. I am 34 weeks and it looks like I am 54 weeks :(

On the upside I don't have heartburn though!

  • I am only 5'5", but most of my height is in my torso. I believe this has made my pregnancy super easy. I am 37 weeks along. No heart burn, no back pain, no trouble breathing, etc... The only downside is that I looked small for quite a long time. It caused me to worry about the baby and whether he was growing enough. When my doctor told me it is probably because I have a long torso it was like a lightbulb going off!

  • Just stumble upon this site, good information learned here in advance for my future wife. Was really looking for backpack advice for longer torsos. I guess longer torso is only good for pregnancy?
  • I'm 5'9" with a long torso, and I still get hearburn, although it's not as bad with this pregnancy as it was last time.
