Intro and concern. Advice needed.

My son was born 3/24 at 36 weeks. He seems to be growing like a champ and we love him to pieces. He was 6 lb 11 oz at birth and we are thinking (from weighing ourselves holding him) that he is in the 9 pound range. He is already in his 3 month clothing!! Here comes my concern....he doesn't seem to give a lot of eye contact and has a tough time tracking items with his eyes. He makes eye contac (it seems) when he is eating - but when awake and in his boppy or bouncy seat - he looks around a lot - but is only looking at my face for a second or two before he looks off somewhere else. He is 5.5 weeks old - adjusted age is just over 1 week old. Should I be concerned? Or do I just need to give it more time considering his adjusted age?

Re: Intro and concern. Advice needed.

  • Based on his adjusted age he is a newborn so he won't be tracking objects or holding eye contact with you just yet.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • At 1 week adjusted his periods of attention on anything will be very brief. Looking away when you are face to face may be a sign that he is overstimulated or tired. Just focus on lots of cuddling... the eye contact will probably improve soon. If you're really concerned I would make an appt with your pedi or call the advice line, only they can tell you whether this is truly something to worry about or not. Good luck!

  • Even if you don't adjust his age, I wouldn't worry about that at this point - he's a NB.
