C-sections

Why did you/are you having a c/s?

I had a vaginal birth with DS1 and a c/s with my twins.  Baby A was breech and my OB will only do a vaginal delivery with twins if both are head down and A is bigger than B.

Re: Why did you/are you having a c/s?

  • Both of my girls were induced early due to various complications. DD1 was born vaginally, but DD2 was too small (IUGR) and was unable to handle induction, so she was born via c/s.

With Ds1, my water broke at home at 40w5d and it was dark brown water from meconium. Went to L&D and never could get past 1cm and ds1 would not drop at all. So we opted for the c/s. He came out at 9lb 12oz and my small pelvic could not open enough to get his big head/shoulders through.

I opted for a rcs with ds2 and will again this time. I had no desire for a vbac after my sister was in the small percentage of uterine rapture trying for a vbac.

  • my pelvic bones are too narrow and i cannot deliver normally, they induced me w/ dd but she would keep floating back up because her head would get stuck. apparently it can be hereditary, i am wishing my dr wouldve asked more questions since my mom and aunt both have the same problem.

  • Both DS's heatbeat and my blood pressure dropped drastically.  One minute everything was fine, the next alarms were going off and a herd of doctors rushed in saying I needed a C/S NOW!  Everything was pretty much a hectic blur, but I remember signing the release forms as they ran my bed to the OR.

  • After laboring for 28 hrs (22 of those without an epidural), I had a C/S due to failure to progress.

  • poor positioning with DS1- OP with brow presentation. Pushed for three hours with no progress whatsoever. DS2 was a vbac, with a 2 hour labour from start to finish.

  • We found out at my 39 week appointment that Madison was frank breech and there wasn't enough fluid to turn her.  All scheduled c-sections were booked for over a week and I went into labour and ended up with an emergency c-section the day after my appointment.

  • I had uncomplicated vaginal deliveries with 1&2.  This one is a scheduled c/s tomorrow 5/2 because she is frank breech.  Very anxious.

  • I was induced at 40 weeks 3 days just post dates and I asked my ob to be induced. Labored all day. Only dilated to 7 cm but her head just would not come down. She ended up weighed 9lbs 1.5 oz or it would have been a vaginal del
  • I was induced at 41 weeks when they estimated DD's weight at 9 lbs 3 oz.  Standard FTM labor (24 hrs) with 4 hours of pushing.  She progressed for the 1st 2 hours and didn't move the last 2.  Her position was off-angle, which probably contributed more to the c/s than her weight.  The "formal" reason for the c/s was failure to descend.  Luckily we never had any issues with her heart rate/health.  Born at 9 lbs, 11 oz.

I was (and continue to be) fine with having had a c/s.  Like a previous poster, my (identical twin) sister had major issues delivering her 9 lb, 8 oz DD- surgery immediately after delivery, self-catheterization when she got home from the hospital, and permanent nerve loss in her leg.  I feel lucky to have avoided these problems.

  • Complications..severe iugr ( wouldnt survive induction), breech, fluid dropped to under 4cms, placenta prematurely aged. he was born at 34 weeks.
My little pumpkin was born at 34weeks, weighing 3lbs, due to severe IUGR & Unexplained Placental Insufficiency. He spent 49 days in the NICU. Lilypie Premature Baby tickers imageimageimageimageimageimage
  • With DD I had a c/s for failure to descend and fetal distress. She was a big baby at 9 pounds 6 ounces. I am having a repeat c/s this time because my doctor dose not think it is likely that I will be able to birth this baby vaginally at he/she has been measuring big my entire pregnancy. (I am almost 37 weeks but measuring 39 weeks). I also (as I suspected and actually have dreamed about) found out at my last appointment that baby is frank breech.
  • Urgent c-section for baby A who was having reverse end diastolic cord flow plus they were both transverse and at 28 weeks my body was not ready to go into labor yet.

  • Mine was done for the same reason as the OP's. Vaginal birth with our singleton but a c-section with the twins due to breech presentation and my OB would only allow a vaginal attempt if they were both head down.

  • I had a vaginal with DD1. DD2 was an induction due to GD and hypertension. I dialated but she never dropped down. They allowed me to push to see if I could bring her down but she wouldn't budge and her heart rate started showing fluctuations so we did the c-section!

    infection.

I got a fever after a long labor and ds got tachycardic.

I think my infection was due to too many vaginal exams. If I have another, I will request infequent "checks" down south.

I have Crohn's Disease, with a history of fistulas.  Both my OB and GI docs are concerned that labor could cause major, life-threatening complications.  I had a CS with DD, 7, and will have a RCS with this little one.

On a slightly different note, I love seeing all the adorable baby pics in everyone's sig!  You all make me so excited to meet this baby.

  • I had a c/s b/c DS was breech.  :-(  Hated it!  Praying next time around I will be able to VBAC.

  • My cord failed and my OB thought it was best to get him out right away at 28w4d. Since it was so early she had to do a classical incision because my uterus wasn't big enough to handle the vertical cut. So because of that I have to have repeat c/s.

  • I was induced at 41w3d due to low fluid.  At 41w6d I had only progressed to 5 cm and we had a c-section.  I have a c-section scheduled for 40w6d but will try to VBAC if I go into labor before that.

  • At 38 weeks exactly I was induced due to a pre-e diagnosis. The induction started Monday night but I was never able to progress on my own. After a foley balloon, breaking my water and intense back labor I was stuck at 4 centimeters for 10 hours. They tried pitocin but son's hb kept dropping.

I had an excess amount of fluid which is probably why I never able to progress on my own.

Wednesday evening at 8 it was decided that a c-section was my only option for delivery. I was very upset but realized that I had to do what was best for my baby.

  • Because I had been in labor for 72 hours and was 4 CM and DD was high and variability was almost nil. Turned our the cord was wrapped around DD's neck which was holding her up and also being compressed with contractions. She was also OP and slightly crooked.

Induced at 41 weeks. My body never labored correctly. LO was huge (9lbs 12oz) and never dropped down and then her heart rate got scary low. We ended in Emergency C-section.

I was deadset on RCS this time which my OB wanted too. Now I am thinking I may try VBAC. As of now my plan is: due date halloween. I want to take LO trick or treating so I would like to schedule RCS for Nov 1. If by chance I go into labor before then I want tor try for a VBAC.

I was in labor for 15 hours and got all the way to 10cm when I was told that DD was face up and stuck. They tried to turn her for close to two hours with no luck. Doctor gave me the option of trying to push (which he didn't think would work anyway) or just go for the c-section. I picked c-section. After the surgery he told me that she was stuck in such a way that she never would have come out if I had tried to push her.

  • DS1 was OP, but no one thought to check or try to change his position until after I had pushed for 4+ hours with him...I was offered an epidural and rest first, but I opted for a c-section at that point.

DS2 was a successful VBAC - he was anterior, and was just over 10.5 lbs, 2+ lbs bigger than his brother.

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I went into labor at 37 weeks, contrax were 5 mins apart for a while, so the Dr broke my water and gave me Pitocin to try and move my labor along. After 21 hrs I hadn't made it past 4 cm so we did a c-section. The reasoning was "failure to progress" and "failure to descend." Poor DS was born with a cone head b/c he had been lodged in there so tightly.

  • DS was born vaginally, but DD (#2) was born by c/s because she wouldn't drop down. I stalled out at 8 cm and they were worried because I had been in labor for so long.

  • My water broke and 40 hours later I had a C because DS's heart rate was dropping. I never dilated past 3. He was 9lbs 10oz.
  • I had a c/s with DD due to her size and something narrow in the birth canal.  I'm having 1 this time due to 1) fear of uterine rupture and 2) the expectation that this baby will be bigger than DD.
