Riding/climbing while pregnant

Hi ladies! I looked back a couple of pages, and there seem to be a lot of runners here, but I didn't see anything about riding/climbing, so here it goes. DH and I are TTC our first. We are going to Moab, UT on vacation for 2 weeks in the beginning of October. While we are there, we plan to rock climb/rappel, ride quads, hike, and ride horses. I have read many mixed recommendations about engaging in these activities while pregnant, but generally speaking it seems to be safe (or at least no more dangerous than doing it while not pregnant) up to about 4-5 months if you normally participate in these sorts of activities prior to pregnancy. Does anyone have experience or has your doctor given you recommendations on the subject? Obviously, any activity that carries a risk of direct trauma to the abdomen could be harmful, but then again I could get into a car accident or fall down the stairs at any given time. I'm just wondering what you ladies think. Thanks!

It sounds a little risky to me.  From my understanding, any activity where there's a hightened risk of falling should not be done during pregnancy.  But hey, it's your baby.  I'd check with your OB.

I'm not into either of those activities, but I'd echo the suggestion of asking your OB. During pregnancy, your center of gravity changes and balance is affected. And, your belly is eventually going to get in the way when climbing. But, as the pp said, it's up to you.

This!! I was only 10 weeks pregnant when I went to Hawaii and went on a pretty extreme hike (I hike all the time) but it was also muddy and rainy....we turned back... I already felt my balance was off and I didn't want to risk falling. True if you do it (running) prior... you can continue... meaning the physical aspect. But don't risk a fall (climbing, horseback rididng etc) go hiking but don't go extreme. Your body is going through a lot of change even if you aren't really showing yet. I got dizzy for no reason...and if you are climbing or on a horse when that happens, could be dangerous for you both

  • I am 24 wks and still do indoor rock climbing...i've also done some flat surface quad riding. I think a lot of the not quadding and horseback riding is all the jostling...so take it easy :) If you're not an experienced horseback rider i wouldnt ride if i were you...it takes a lot of strength and control...also you'd be riding horses you dont know :/ Anyways good luck and enjoy your trip!
