Babies: 9 - 12 Months

For those with LO's with slow weight gain

Just wanted to share that we had our 9 month appt yesterday. DS has gained a little over a pound since 6 months and has crossed over two lines on his growth curve. Our dr tested for anemia and he is indeed anemic.  He also refuses almost all solids. We are going to see a gastroenterologist to get him into a feeding program at the local children's hospital. We are also starting iron supplements.

I know not all doctors test for anemia at 9 months but wanted to put this out there. I know there are a few other moms on here with LO's struggling to gain. You may want to request hey be tested if your pedi doesn't already do it.

  • Good luck.  I hope you get some answer soon.  We had a lot of issues with DD gaining and are doing better but still not out of the woods.  She was off her reflux meds from 5 - 8 months because I could not get previcid and she would throw everything else up.  She also stopped eating solids.  And fell off the bottom of the charts (below the 3rd percentile for height and weight).  We saw a GI who got us back on previcid and has us giving high calorie formula.  she's gaining weight now, but not really growing in height like she should.  We've had tons of blood work done (thyroid, celiac, allergies, hormones, iron levels, etc) as well as a bone scan to check for growth disorders.  But, all seems to be normal.  We're hoping she catches up soon.

  • DD gained like 1.5 lbs from 6 mon to 9 mon, but from 8-9 mon. she gained almost a whole pound, so I feel like that is progress, even though it doesn't look it from 6-9 month check-up. I think it is because she is taking in more solids and wasn't so much from 6-7 months. We took her to the doc around 8 mon for a flu shot and I insisted they weigh her. Our pedi is going to rec a blood test at 12 mon if he sees that she is dropping off the charts. After examining her and noticing how she is meeting all milestones appears to be healthy, good muscle tone, crawling everywhere, etc. that there was no need for a test at this time. I still worry a lot about it, so I think I am going to get her weighed at 10 mon and 11 mon just to make sure she is putting on weight. Good luck to you!
