Just for fun...if you could live anywhere..

If you could live anywhere and still do your current job, live your life as you do now type of thing  - would you stay in the same area you are in now or would you move someplace else?

I moved to my current area in 2001 to be close to my sister and her family.  I met DH here and this is where he has lived since he was 3.  His family (parents and sibs) are here.  I have never loved the area although the school my girls are/will be in is great and we have amazing docs - I would move in a heartbeat.  DH and I have talked about moving to the Chicago area in the past (very easy to get to either of our families from there) as we have lots of friends in that area but I doubt it would ever happen.  My sister may end up moving out of start this summer due to her DH's job and I will be so upset of that happens - might need to get DH really on board with moving then!!!

  • I love the area I live in - just not the town I'm in.  The cost of living here is out of control and I'll never get my husband to move away (he's lived in a 30 mile radius his entire life).  I'd love to have a bigger house with some property a little ways east of where we live now.

BUT I think I'd love to live in the Atlantic/Maritime provinces of Canada.  Ever since I began listening to a band called Great Big Sea, I've had a weird fascination with Newfoundland.   Seems so.. different.. than anywhere else.  Beautiful scenery, remote, quaint, just really unique culture.

I've already lived most places I want to live and moved back here to be near my family. If I could bring my family and some friends with me I wouldn't mind moving back to London or Vancouver. Probably London.
  • Like where we are currently and I've lived a lot of places too (thanks to my military service) ...but since you said ANYWHERE...I'd love to live in Aruba - not just vacation there; if friends and family weren't a factor.  But, hey, we could always come back to the states for a visit if we had too!  LOL!

The older I get, the more I'd like to move south, for the weather.  But I would like to move to a similar town like Milwaukee, less than  1 mil. people, still has decent culture, but good sports, schools, and close enough to a large body of water.

Squeeeeeeee!!!! I love Great Big Sea!! Um, you sure about Newfoundland?? I'd take New Brunswick over Newfoundland. Remember my nutty next door neighbor? He's the reason why there's the running joke about Newfies. That said, almost all of the people I know from there are kind, generous and great fun. It's half work, half house party. And it's breathtaking. I wouldn't love the amount of snow. I'll stick here with our minute snowfall. Their yearly average in Newfoundland is about 450 to 500 cm (177 to 200"), most snow at one time was a metre (39").

I'd like to do a 50/50. Half the year here, the other half Hawaii. They have great coffee, it smells like flowers, and I could live on the North Shore. Because I am crazy enough to want to surf there.

  • Oh GT.. I wouldn't want to live there forever... just long enough for Alan Doyle to meet me and realize I should be his girlfriend.  :)

I could buy into the Hawaii/Newfoundland thing.  Ironically, hubby is in Hawaii this week for work.. again without me.  Ugh.

I love the area I live in (and the state) but if I lived one town over I could afford a bigger house with a smaller yard (it's currently opposite now). After having LO, I realized our house is too small and we need more room, at least more room on the main living floor.  With our value/mortgage ratio issues, it will be a long time before we can think about that.

My parents and siblings all live nearby so it would be hard to move but I wouldn't mind living in upstate NY near all of my aunts/uncles/cousins (both sides) or Hawaii (friends live there and I just love it!).

I can dig it!! And boo for you not being in Hawaii too. I'd love to be there right now. We've had so much rain and dreary weather I'd rather be in Hawaii. Heck, even Newfoundland.

Oh and thanks a lot, I had When I'm Up I Can't Get Down stuck in my head all last night.

  • I moved back to NY to be with family after 9-11 (I lost many friends)....I hate my job, my pay is worse here than other locales, etc. but I do not want to leave my family (for the good the bad and the ugly)

Very cool.  I was born and raised in Nova Scotia so I definitely have listened to my share of GBS.  Funny enough I've never been to Newfoundland.  People out east tend to be very friendly and welcoming, and the way of life just feels slower (calmer) whenever I go back for visits.

ETA: if we could live anywhere where money was no object we'd be somewhere in the Caribbean.

This ranch wants me to buy it. It's about three hours from here on the way to the coolest, little artsy town. The ranch actually is for sale, for the very sensible price of FORTY MILLION DOLLARS. Yikes!

As for realism, I love where I am, but sometimes I think living in the country instead of town would be nice. But, I'm really forgetful, so it's helpful to live only four minutes from campus :-)

  • I love where I live (MN as well) but if I could be ANYWHERE and be in the same job, same relative economic status? London, England. In a hot freaking second. It's the home of my heart.
