The three photographers I've talked to ask for pics within 10 days bc that's when the baby is sleepiest. Just have a photographer on call since you can't really schedule the appt in advance. As for announcements, mine went out with 1.5 months w DD. with this one I think it might be a christmas/birth announcement.

We did them with the in-house hospital photographer. The package we ordered included various enlargements, announcements & CD. DS was born Dec 12 & the announcements we picked were Christmas-themed, so as soon as they came in, I sent them out so people could get them by Christmas.
I don't think everyone does them that quickly, though!
I spoke with my photographer yesterday and she wants me in within the first week of his birth. I think because they're still sleeping all the time, it makes for better pictures.
We did DS's when he was 9 days old. It's best before 10 days because they are still sleepy and curled up like in the womb. Announcements will probably go out around 1-1.5 months or whenever we get the pics from the photographer and have her make the announcement cards for us.
I am a photographer and we like to have them done in the first 10 days, since you still get the perfect sleepy newborn-ness (yes that's a technical term lol) after 10 days they are more awake and more likely to fuss during the session and you won't get those fun newborn poses.
Announcements- our clients ussually have them ordered and mailed within 6 weeks.

Ours went out way late. We didn't even take pics till DD was 6 weeks and then the announcements took forever to come in. I think she was close to 3 months by the time I finally got them out. I'm hoping it'll be a smoother process this time around.
Try to secure your photographer NOW, not when baby shows up - otherwise you won't be able to find a good one. They book up quickly.
We had our sons done around 3 weeks and had the announcements out soon after that. You can't send them out until your photographer gets the pictures to you.
With DS, they did pics in the hospital at 3 days old. I am going to shoot for the first week for sure.
I doubt we'll send out announcements, though we will send out a holiday card that includes a newborn pic, a pic of DS, and a pic of either them together or all four of us.
I do them anytime within the first two weeks, unless they were a premie. I am pretty strick with this too as I have tried a three week old that didnt work out very well. The baby was too awake, and didn't like to be curled up in the positions at all.
Announcements I think are fine within that first month.

We did ours at home. We bought a nice camera and our pictures looked as professional as any of them. DS was 3 days old and he was perfect for us. I had the envelopes addressed the week before he was born and ordered the pictured online the day we took them. His announcements were out within two weeks. This time around, i have some cute baskets and accessories for the pics.
I try to have mine done within the first week (recommended by photog and also b/c my babies come out looking like toddlers I then send out the birth announcements within the first month!
DH is a photographer, and if all goes well he will be taking the pictures within the first week. We will also take a few more a couple weeks later when LO is more alert, and then do a collage-type announcement/Christmas card in early December. We will add a picture of all of us right before we send them out, so maybe that will be at 6 weeks.
If LO comes near his due date, then he will be about 10 weeks when the announcements go out. We figured that we would just send them as holiday cards, since it's so close.
Agree with pp, before 10 days. DS was born on 12/3 and his birth announcement was our Christmas card. I was on top of it yo! I plan to get this baby's announcement out a week before Halloween.
Re: Timing of newborn photos & birth announcements?
I think you're supposed to do it the first 7 to 10 days. I can't remember the reasoning, but that's supposed to be the best time.
I mailed my birth announcements out when DD was 4 weeks old, though family members were pestering me about it for weeks...

Thanks for all your input! I would never have thought it would need to be so soon...glad I asked.
