has anyone started swim lessons with their lo's? Or another activity? If you have a son, does anyone take dance class..? My husband is not for it, but my 1 year old loves to move around when he hears music... I was considering music class too... or a gym type class...
We've been going to a Kindermusik class since October (DS also loves to dance). He seems to like it although it's not like he's dancing circles around the classroom. He mostly likes to run around and see if he can get into any trouble.
We really enjoyed Little Gym, did it from about 16 months to 2 yrs I guess. We did swim lessons around 2 and I was not a fan b/c it was just standing around in a pool trying to get them used to the water & they were already very used to the water...I was hoping for more 'skills' but it is hard since there are so many different kids in the parent/child classes. But we did get them to learn sort of how to climb out (elbow, elbow, knee, knee). I'm sure all the swim lessons are different though.
Those kindermusik classes seem to be really popular but I never did them. I'm not sure if you've found dance classes but I have yet to find a whole lot of 'classes' for kids under 3 aside from those mentioned, so maybe a music type class would be good for him to be able to dance & sing/use instruments.
DD has been in swim lessons since she was 6 month old and she effing loves it. She has never cried in the pool, she is a total water rat and laughs and kicks the whole time. We go to a legit swim school just for little ones and it is very safety-oriented and teaches them all about kicking, floating, etc. We plan to continue lessons until she's 3 or 4 for safety reasons; there is water everywhere around us.
Our library does a "wiggles and giggles" class where they sing, play instruments, and dance. I plan to join the next session. I also know a couple kids in the 14-18m age range who are enrolle on gymnastics.
We are in the midst of parent-tot swimming lessons with the boys. They absolutely love it! They get excited when we hit the parking lot and it just goes from there. It's really a fun time and awesome to watch.
We are also taking swim classes and DS loves it. He gets so excited when we get in the pool and loves to splash. Since he is so young, I hold him so he is not swimming. My goal is for him to not be afraid to go in our pool this summer. The class is fun. We sing songs, splash around, he has let me wet his face, and he can climb up the wall.
Gymboree is also a lot of fun. We recently did a free class and are about to sign up to go weekly.
My son took swim lessons last summer when he was 11 months old and he had a good time. We have a pool ourself though and he was already use to the water and loved it already.
He also took a gymnastics class at 18 months for a month. He LOVED it! At his age...it really isn't gymnastics...it is more like a basic motor development class. Running, skipping, jumping, climbing, etc... I will probably sign him back up this summer when I'm off work. I think it is good to get children involved in activities like this with other children to get them ready for the future.
My husband is also kind of like yours. He hopes Carter doesn't want to really do mens gymnastics or dance...of course he wants his son playing football/baseball/basketball, etc... I feel the same way actually and I was a competitive gymnast...quit at level 8. I guess you all may flame away, but I want my son in "boy" sports when he is older and hope he wants to be too, but I would never deny him of what he really wants to do, no matter what it is. With that being said...I think it is great to get our little ones invovled in anything at this age.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps... Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1). Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
We did Gymboree in TX and loved it. Since moving to TN, the closest Gymboree is too far for me to do weekly. We do a Tots Tumble class once a week at a local Gymnastic Gym. It is a parent involved class for 1-2 year olds.
I'm thinking about doing a music class, Music Together. The next session starts this Saturday and runs through June. I need to make up my mind quick.
Re: Anyone take swim lessons or another activity
We did Gymboree when DD was 1 and she loved it. They also have some sort of music class that would probably be good too if your LO likes to move.
When DD was 18 months we joined My Gym and she loves that too. She's a very active little girl and loves to jump, run. climb, etc.

LO has been in music and swim since she was 5 months old.
She is now in gymnastics as well. She started that a few months ago.
