Cloth Diapering

Tell me about diaper pails

So I just started CDing. I've heard of wet bags, diaper pails, wet pails. What should I be doing? Do I have to buy something specific, right now I'm just using a garbage can with a lid.

  • Whatever works for you. Except wet pails, that is - manufacturers recommend against it now because it can break down the elastic and pul, and well.... it's gross. Plus, having a bucket of water around a baby.... not the best idea.

I do suggest at least a wet bag for when you are out and about, so if you have a poop out of the house, you can toss it in the bag, deal with it when you get home, and not worry about your diaper bag getting poopy in the process!

I like my hanging wet bag, so I can just empty the diapers in the wash and toss the bag in with it.  All Clean, no smell.  It just hangs off the basement door, so it goes right down the steps into the washer.

I would actually suggest against a lid, since oxygen can actually slow down the production of ammonia.  The only wet bag that zips shut that I own is my travel bag.  But, there are plenty of pail liners available, that function just like a wet bag and can travel with you and be washed, but lines your pail like a trashbag.

I like my Fuzzibunz wet bag, since it's bungee on the top, hangs from the door knob, and unzips on the bottom to release diapers without reaching in there.

  • I use a regular plastic trash can with a Planet Wise pail liner. Just throw the diapers in there, dump into the washer on laundry day.

Wet bags come in tons of sizes - I have two that I carry with me when we're out of the house to put wet diapers in.

We also did this. I did not use cloth wipes, so we used a diaper genie for the wipes.

  • I use a laundy basket.  It is cheap and the holes in the side allow for air flow to keep the diapers from getting stinky.  I wash every other day and my laundry room does not stink even with the open basket.  I spray the basket about once a week with white vinegar to keep it clean.
