Cloth Diapering

XP: Quick CD help!

Since DS1 had a rash dr. recommended chlorine free diapers. They are $$$$ and every.single.morning he wakes up soaking wet. My Mom and Nanny told me I should try to CD at night. I'm ok with this cause he ::whispers:: never poops at night. Here is my question - I went to Buy Buy Baby (don't have time to order) and got Bum Genius stay-dry cloth diaper and I bought a package of the inserts. It's one that snaps. I hope it fits him - it's for up to 35 pounds and he's 25...fingers crossed.Questions: do I really need to use BumGenius detergent or is Purex free & clear ok? With these inserts, do I just put 1 in or should I put 2 at night? I guess I really need to wash before use, right? (which means it won't dry by tonight cause the cover says to line dry). Do I was the cover every day or just the inserts? Anything else I need to know?He is 16 months and 25 pounds, if that helps. TIA

  • You don't need to use the Bum Genius detergent.  Purex free & clear might work okay, but there are better options for CDs.  See the FAQ at the top of this board.  You do need to wash before use.  You should usually air dry the covers, but putting them in the dryer today won't kill them.  Use low or medium heat.

For nighttime, you will definitely need both inserts.  That might not be enough.  If it's not, buy some hemp inserts to add to the microfiber.

Wash the covers every time you use them.  Pull the inserts out of the pocket before throwing them in the wash.  Wash on hot and then rinse twice with cold.  Use less detergent than most detergent makers recommend.

ETA: From reading your post, I can't tell if you have Bum Genius 4.0 or Flips.  If it's the 4.0, it has a pocket that you stuff with the inserts.  The cover needs to be washed every time you use it.  If it's Flips, you can just wipe out the cover and use a few times as long as it doesn't get poop on it.

  • I personally use ultra tide powder on my CDs.  So far no problems.  You'll want to avoid liquid detergents.  For a small load of dipes (about 16 diapers) I use 2 Tbsps of detergent.

I double stuff my 4.0s at night.  One insert just won't cut it with my 5 month olds.

You might be surprised at how fast the covers dry.

For 25lbs I think you might need the middle snap on the insert or just don't snap it.  I haven't gotten to that point so I'm no help.

  • This was super helpful. Thanks...and it's the 4.0 so if this works I will buy more covers (or just get used to doing 1 load a day I guess).
  • Wash and dry, it'll be fine.  I would avoid your detergent, and if you aren't looking at CDing full time, I would just buy Tide instead of really looking at specialty detergent - you won't use much at all.

Use both inserts, and snap the rise to the medium setting.  I have a 22 pound 1 year old and that's what he's on.  My 30 pound 2.5 yo is on the full rise on most.
