Quick CD help!

Yes - that's CD as in Cloth Diaper. Can't believe I'm posting this.

Since JT had his rash dr. recommended chlorine free diapers. They are $$$$ and every.single.morning he wakes up soaking wet. My Mom and Nanny told me I should try to CD at night. I'm ok with this cause he ::whispers:: never poops at night.

Here is my question - I went to Buy Buy Baby (don't have time to order) and got Bum Genius stay-dry cloth diaper and I bought a package of the inserts. It's one that snaps. I hope it fits him - it's for up to 35 pounds and he's 25...fingers crossed.

Questions: do I really need to use BumGenius detergent or is Purex free & clear ok? With these inserts, do I just put 1 in or should I put 2 at night? I guess I really need to wash before use, right? (which means it won't dry by tonight cause the cover says to line dry). Do I was the cover every day or just the inserts? Anything else I need to know?

TIA

Re: Quick CD help!

  • My CD career was very short lived, but I will try to help...

Questions: do I really need to use BumGenius detergent or is Purex free & clear ok? Free and clear of any brand is fine. If you've been using any other detergents though, you will want to do a vinegar wash to get rid of any residue (goggle for instructions) in your machine.  With these inserts, do I just put 1 in or should I put 2 at night? You'll have to experiment. Inserts become more absorbent the more you use them, so you may need to use 2 since they're brand new. I guess I really need to wash before use, right? Yes. Do I wash the cover every day or just the inserts? That's really up to you. You can wipe the covers clean until they are soiled. If you're doing a load of wash for the inserts anyways, you may as well do the covers too. Don't let the inserts sit longer than 48 hours after becoming soiled/wet.

I'm the same as SweetH, I only CD'd for 1-2 weeks.  I still have a stash I'm trying to get rid of!

I used Purex F&C to wash them.  You can put as many inserts as needed for night.  I always used 2 for day & night.  You need to prep them before using, I forget what the instructions are.  They should be on the package.  Covers can be reused.  I used the pocket diapers so I washed them after every use.

Good luck, I hope it helps with JT's rash.  I will say that while we used them DD's bottom was dry and we didn't have any rashes.  If you use diaper rash cream you have to get a special kind or use a liner to protect your diaper.

  • I'm curious - why did you guys both stop CDing? What didn't you like about it?

I'll be honest, unless I fall in love (which I doubt) this will only be for at night since he leaks through the Earth's Best...but I will continue to buy those for the daytime.

Pure laziness. I only have 4 CDs, so I'd start using them after her morning poop. They'd usually get me through until bed time. Then the next day I had to wash/dry them. By then, I was back in the swing of using Pampers. I still have them for when my Amazon shipments don't arrive in time, but other than that, they sit in a drawer. I should just buy more, but I know that once I have 2U2 I'm not going to be wanting to do even more laundry.

They started leaking for me, and when I posted on the CD board about it they said I should be changing them every 2 hours.  That's alot of diaper changes in one day!!  Plus, DD pee's alot at night and they were leaking like crazy.  I didn't have the effort to fix the problem so I went back to disposables.  Plus, I just found out I was preg, and the smell made my nausea way worse!

So, to sum it up...pretty much I'm lazy!! :)-

  • JT leaks through the Earth's Best?? I'm so surprised because they are our favorites compared to 7th Gen and Huggies naturals. Have you tried going 1 size up for nighttime?

We used a CD that someone gave me 1 time at night when DD was really little. She woke up a few hours after she went to sleep and started screaming. No matter what I did she wouldn't go back to sleep. I finally realized that she was not used to the feeling of the CD when it was wet. After a diaper change she went right back down.

It really sucks that you have to do all of this right now. It's a lot of energy all the time, but ESPECIALLY when you're pregnant. I hope JT gets better right away.

Wow! I'm so excited that you are crossing over. =) Yeah, Bum Genius should totally fit him. They still fit my LO with lots of room to grow. You can just wash the insert and cover once to prep it and throw it in the dryer on medium/low. It will be fine. You can use Purex free and clear, but if it is a liquid you might get the stinkies after a while. FWIW, I used all free and clear liquid for over a year with no issues until we moved and had a different washer and water type. I use Tide powder right now and it works great.

To wash them the first time just wash normally with your clothes. It will be fine. But after they are used you will want to wash just with diapers. Do a warm rinse with no soap. Then do a full wash cycle with soap (fill to 1st line) on warm/cold then follow with a cold rinse. =)

Let me know how it goes. Oh yeah and I would use both inserts at night. =)

4 would not be enough for us. In the day I change him every hour or so. We go through a lot of diapers. But I have so many that its not an issue. Washing every day would be annoying. I wash every 2-3 days.  Big Smile

  • Also, if you bought a pocket diaper you need to wash the cover/diaper and the inserts. Take the inserts out of the pocket to wash it.

And when you use it, don't lay the microfiber inserts against the baby's skin. Stuff them into the pocket. I'm sure the directions will tell you that, but I know that many people have done that by mistake and it is really drying to skin. Big Smile

  • The covers say to line dry, but f*ck that noise. lol.

The one thing I'll add is that you don't have to wash every day, but you have to at least 4 days or the ammonia smell & buildup can get out of control.  Even if you only have 4 diapers to wash at that point, lol.  Definitely wash before use... the ones I got recommend washing 5+ times if you buy them new before you use them. I washed them once and they were fine, though they did get more absorbent over time initially.

I use the watermelon-scented rockin green because I am a dork.
