I've found that the one's with out the chest strap aren't very accurate...almost like not using one at all.
I've only ever had a Polar FT7 (which doesn't have a pedometer), and now I moved up to a Garmin 405c because I do outdoor cycling and it gives me GPS coordinates and tells me how far and how fast I went. GL there's lots of options out there.
Mine is also a Polar with chest strap, but has no pedometer. Pedometers in general aren't very accurate, unless you want to spring for a GPS watch. I have a Polar S120 which they don't make any longer, but I love it. The only downside with Polar units is that the battery must be replaced by the company. I've sent both the battery and strap in to them and they replace the batteries for something like $10? (It has been awhile since I've done it, so I don't remember exactly). The idea is that way they can test and make SURE it maintains its watertight properties.
