So DH and I are going to be buying the crib tomorrow and I was looking at crib sets. Here's my question...if baby's aren't supposed to sleep with blankets or bumpers...whats the point of a crib set? DH and I are frugal with our money most the time and while the crib sets are o so cute I don't want to buy them if they just collect dust.
So realistically what do I need? Would just a fitted sheet work? TIA
Re: FTM question about Crib
Mattress pad & a fitted sheet. (and 1-2 extra sheets). If you want you can buy a crib skirt and/or breathable bumper separately.
You don't "need" all the other stuff.
Having bought two crib sets, I would say skip it. Unless you can't find the theme elsewhere. I really wanted a stars and fish theme so we bought it and only ended up using the skirt, valance, and sheet. The quilt was cute but now that LOs a big boy it's too short. Go figure!
I would say get some 3-4 sheets, a breathable bumper (if you like them), and a skirt if you don't like seeing under the crib. Now that our LO is a bigger boy the mattress is set to the lowest setting and the skirt is all bunched up.
Our summer baby slept in a Halo short sleeved sleep sack with onesie and socks. Or if he was sweaty, a cotton sleep sack with the onesie and socks. Our winter baby slept in the same thing but with long sleeved jammies and socks.
We are also going with just a mattress pad and sheets. The crib sets are cute, but you can't use most of the stuff in them so they are a waste of money imo.
I am also a FTM but our plan is for baby to sleep in a onesie and swaddled. We got one cotton swaddle sack thing and one fleece one. We also have the light muslin blankets from Aden + Anais if he likes being swaddled but gets too hot in the swaddle sacks.
The only reason we got a crib set is because my FIL found it on clearance for less than $20. We also just bought a couple sets of sheets when they were on sale
I think It depends on how important your bedding is to your nursery theme.
We got the whole set. And for the first year I thought it was a huge waste of money. But, now DD sleeps with the comforter. And I cut the bumper in half and we're using it as body pillows on her big girl bed. So, it kind of ties her new bed in with the theme of the nursery.
But, no, you don't actually 'need' any of that stuff.
We bought a crib set before having DS and never really used it. We had it set up all fancy before he was born, but then once he was in his crib we took out the bumpers and the blanket, leaving just the sheet. We ended up never putting the blanket or bumper back in. We didn't feel the need for a bumper, and we received a lot of really lovely, nicer, and lighter blankets that we ended up using instead of the crib set one.
With DD we just bought a couple new crib sheets. And then used the same blankets we had with DS.
Realistically, you just need crib sheets.
1. Just a mattress cover and sheet. We also have a breathable bumper we used when DS started moving around, so his arms/legs didnt get stuck.
- Side note: if you do the the set: the big cushier bumpers also work to tie around the top rim of the crib once you have a "stander" and a teether. Just add a couple ribbons if needed.
2. Depending on the temp in your house; We usually put DS in a onesie, sleeper and either swaddled or a sleep sack. If it was a little warmer we left off the onesie or sleeper.
