PIO tips & tricks?

After 3 days of PIO, I can hardly take it anymore. The injection itself is fine, but the pain gets bad about 30 minutes after and continues for 2-3 hrs. The soreness the next day doesn't bother me, it's those miserable 2+hrs that is getting hard to deal with.

We are doing 2mL of PIO (sesame oil). The circles my nurse drew seem really low. My low rise panties completely cover them. They extend from the top of my crack to almost halfway down my butt. Perhaps the lower location makes them hurt more?

Ive been doing the injections standing up, but with weight on the opposite leg. Maybe lying down would make the muscle even more relaxed and hurt less?

A heating pad does nothing to soothe the pain. Anything else I can do?

  • The area you are describing for the shots seem low.  Mine are above my "crack" line.  I lie face down and have DH do my shots for me.  I don't use a heating pad at all, I just massage the area for several minutes after the shot.  Also if I get up and walk around for a bit, I find it reduces lumps vs just sitting on my arse after the shot.

Exactly this! See if your RE/nurses will draw targets on your bum. Mine did the other day and so far the shots are much better! takes guess work out.

Definitely heating pad after and go for a short walk. They told me not to lie down/go to bed right after because it just sits there in one spot.

Good Luck... these shots are the worst but will hopefully be worth it all! :)

  • That does seem low. My area is above the crack. One time, I accidentally did it below and it was definitely worse.

I massage hard after the injection and then sit on a heating pad for 15 minutes. After 17 days now I am starting to get some bruising and am a little sore, but not bad at all yet.

  • After the injection, make sure to use moist heat and massage the injection site.  I would do heat for a couple of minutes, then massage for a minute, then heat, then massage, etc. for about 10 minutes total.  I originally started out with dry heat and it did nothing.  I switched to moist heat and never had any pain again.  According to my RE office, moist heat penetrates the muscle better.  I also always drew a little target so I'd know exactly where to massage.

  • This picture really helped us:

We were not doing it in the right spot for IVF#1. I am freaked out about PIO this time around too. We are going to be on a lower dosage but I have been on up to 2.5ml and it sucks. I use heat before hand and heat after. Unfortunately I dont respond well to the massage because I dont want anyone to touch me after that. But I heard walking around will help. We are switching the time of our shots and our nurse said to try the am instead of evening so we are willing to do anything at this point.

GL to you and I hope it gets easier!

  • Thanks ladies!

I tried some of your suggestions and so far so good (I'm about 1 hr post PIO). I did get a nasty lump for the first time, but DH massaged it away mostly.

I lied down for the shot, had DH do it at the very top of my target, massaged as normal, walked around for a few minutes, then put heat on immediately instead of waiting for pain.

I'm guessing I'll get the hang of this.
