Since you asked (No-Cry Sleep Solution breakdown)

The NCSS is all about gradual progress from how you do things now to how you want them to be. You make a 10 day log of naptimes, bedtime routine, and night wakings, then review and make appropiate changes. I kind of just went right into making changes because I knew what wasn't working. I am keeping a log of that now so I can review in 10 days and see what is working and what is not. You can repeat this 10 day cycle until your baby is cleep all by themselves.

It gives tips about sleep patterns in babies and tells why they wake at night. The book has instructions for BFing, FFing, co-sleeping, etc. so whatever your family does is covered.

Here are some suggestions that the author talks about before taking the prescribed steps:

  • Get yourself and your baby ready.
  • Develop a bedtime routine.
  • Establish an early bedtime.
  • Follow a flexible yet predictable daytime routine.
  • Have your baby take regular naps.
  • Help you baby learn how to fall asleep without help (teach them that their bed is a safe and comfortable place, teach them to be able to fall asleep in diffferent ways)
  • Introduce a lovey of some sort.
  • Make night sleeping different from daytime naps.
  • Develop key words as a sleep cue.
  • Use music or sound as a sleep cue.
  • Change your baby's sleep associations.

Once all of these ideas are in place, you can start to gradually help baby to fall asleep without your help in phases:

  1. Comfort until baby is almost asleep.
  2. Comfort until baby is settled and sleepy.
  3. Comfort without pickups.
  4. Soothing pats.
  5. Verbally soothing baby.
  6. Comfort from outside the doorway.

I like that it is gradual and that it promotes comforting baby while slowly removing yourself from the situation to teach them to be able to comfort themselves. It seems like it would take forever to complete, but I have only been doing to for 2 night and they have been gloriously sleep-fiilled! Saoirse slept 10 hours without waking the first night and then 9 1/2 hours with only one short wake-up the second night. I think all of the early suggestions helped us (bedtime routine, earlier bedtime, going right to her when she wakes up hepled her go back to sleep sooner). We already had special sleep music and she already likes her bed so that was easy for us.

I just started so I am still putting her to sleep on my shoulder as usual and transferring her to the crib, but it is taking about 5 mintues now (as opposed to the 20 minutes or more that it used to take) and she is not waking up when I put her into the crib. It's awesome. She had been waking up 2-3 times per night for 30 minutes to 2 hours on bad nights and now she's not. Seriously, t's awesome. i can't wait to get to the point when i can just put her down awake and she will sleep on her own, but we'll work up to that.

Give it a shot. It's totally working for us. We've only been doing it for 2 days and she has been doing great at night. Plus she took a 2 hour nap yesterday and today. Un-effing-believable!

  • Glad it's working for you!! I'm reading the book also and just started tonight. We've had naps down for a while (DH stays at home with her and did the Sleep Lady thing for naps in January), but nights have been horrendous lately with 2-hour wakeups almost every night. Hoping things get better soon.
