Cloth Diapering

how many cd does your lo go through??

Just started researching cloth diapers and DH and I are very interested in starting our ds3 with these! Too bad we didn't look into these with ds1 or ds2. We could have saved TONS of money. Anyway, I had a question.  How many cd does your lo go through every 24 hours? Ds3 is only 2 months but I feel like we change him a bunch of times because of pee, poops, and sharts! I would say I change him about every 2-3 hours in the daytime and 3-4 times during bedtime. However, there were times I've wasted 3 diapers in a session because he would pee again right after or he would get sneaky and poop as soon as I've finished changing him. I want to have an idea of how much babies get changed with cd's as opposed to disposable diapers, if there even is a difference with amount. Also, do you change if your lo had a shart? hehe curious because I usually do with disposable diapers.

TIA from a soon-to-be newbie! :)

  • My DS goes through about 15 diapers a day, but he was like your LO, one time I went through 8 diapers in a row because he kept pooping!!

  • We change LK every 2-3 hours, so about 8/9 diapers a day.  She sleeps through the night, so she doesn't need a change then.  I always put a prefold under her while changing her so if she pees or poops (it's more likely that she'll pee during a change) it goes on the prefold that I wasn't planning on using anyway and it keeps the diaper clean until I put it on her.

We do this too. I change about every 2 hours during the day and we're generally dealing with one dirty diaper at night too, so we're at about 8/9 diapers per day. As a NB it was more as he was changed more often at night.

I think the general rule of thumb to wash every other day and have a bit of a buffer is 2 dozen diapers for an infant or toddler, 3 dozen for a newborn.

  • We went through 12-15 when she was a nb with messy EBF poop. Once she started solids and was sleeping longer, it became much less, maybe 8/9-ish. Now we're down to 6/day at 16 mos.

  • I'm around 5-6 a day for Owen, and 4ish for Cole.

And yes, I change a shart ;)  If I notice, honestly.  Cloth diapers don't stink like disposables, so every little drop doesn't waft out of their clothes!

And you're younger one is still prime time for cloth too :)  I use one-size diapers, so my two wear the same ones!

  • At that age I pretty much changed every 2 hours by the clock - I could never tell if he was dirty by the smell. And yes, we went through multiple diapers in a change, that's why I was so glad I was using mainly prefolds. Most of the time I would use one prefold as a "changing pad", and that would get dirty every time, so that's double the diapers. We had 36 diapers and washed every other day, and definitely needed to. So about 15-18 diapers a day. Now it's only about 6-8.

  • Just want to add that the nice thing about cloth is that you don't really worry about going through a lot of diapers. Whenever we've used disposables, I can't help but think 'There's $0.20 in the trash!' I usually change at least every 2 hours. But lately, more frequently since DS had the stomach flu and I really wanted to avoid diaper rash.

  • When DD was an infant she went through 12-14 diapers a day I think.  The number has dropped as she's gotten older.  I think now she goes through 6-7 a day.
