Recommend a backpack carrier for toddlers

My son is 15 months and prefers walking over stroller rides now.  I can't let him walk everywhere (we'd never be able to go anyplace!) so I'm hoping to find a backpack carrier that allows him to sit up high.  I have a Beco Gemini that worked great as an infant carrier but he wants to see more than it allows him to do now.  Something lightweight and portable is key - we don't plan on using this for hikes, just strolls around town, and for our trip to Hawaii next week.

  • I know this is sometimes shunned, but if he loves walking, what about getting one of these so he has the freedom to walk but you don't have to worry about him getting into danger?

In terms of the carrier, we have the kelty kids backpack one and we love it. You can find them used on CL all the time, or new at REI (if you have one in your area). I still use it on my 33lb 2 year old on occasion. I even wore it 8 months pregnant and found it comfy.

  • Kinderpacks are supposed to be awesome for toddlers - I haven't tried one yet but have one otw.

I have a toddler size Olives & Applesauce that I really like (good for petite mamas too) & I also have a toddler size Dream Carrier. I love that one but I'm about to sell it b/c the straps are too long.

I used to not be into SSCs very much, but Ari doesn't have the patience for wrapping anymore & I usually only have him up for a short time anyway - like half of a walk or to give him a break on an outing.

  • I adore my KinderPack for my toddler.

He also loves looking around and checking stuff out and has been really happy in our KP.

I just recently moved him up to the toddler size at 2.5 as he really liked the arms out freedom in the standard.

I also loved being able to x the straps in back and pop on the hood so he could nurse/nap on front.

  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I actually do have a harness but it's not so much the safety at this age...he's just started walking so he's still slow and easily distracted.  It would take us forever to get anywhere!  So I'm hoping to find something that moves him along without him screaming because he feels restrained (like in a stroller).

I just looked up the Dream Carrier and Kinderpack but they don't look like they allow for high back carries?  I can do a back carry with my Beco but he sits too low back there.  I just got a Mei Tai hoping I can do a higher back carry but since I'm flat chested the straps fall down to my waist so he ends up sitting low. :-p. So the REI carrier sounds like a good option...

  • I'm able to get a higher carry in the DC & my O&A than I was my Beco. Another option to look at is the Kanga XT or XTP (depending on the size of your toddler). It's an SSC like the others but is designed to be worn higher. They are hard to come by but you can probably find one on TBW FSOT.

  • I have a BabyHawk Oh Snap and I love it. I can wear her for hours and be perfectly comfortable the whole time.
