July 2011 Moms

Anyone else in a less than ideal living situation?

We are renting a one bedroom and ds room is the dining room that we made into his nursery. We put up this curtain patrician from ikea. I think it looks good :) but there is not doubt that we are kind of ghetto having out son live in a dining room and we have no table (but honestly we usually ate on the couches long before LO. Living day to day I think it is a comfortable apt for us. And we are able

To save like $1000 a month. Which helps (dh is a teacher and u am a guidance counselor so we don't make much.  but sometime when friends stop by I get embarrassed

Re: Anyone else in a less than ideal living situation?

  • I think very people are in their ideal living situations when their first baby comes along and thats perfectly okay. I'm going through a divorce, and on a last resort basis moved into my mom and step fathers house. Odd yes, but it works for now.

Since your baby isn't here yet, and for the first year or two of his life he won't even notice if he has his own room or night I think your perfectly okay where your at now. Your saving quite a bit a month!!! Which will help so much when your ready for a bigger place. Just make a goal, stick to it and before you know it you'll be in the house of your dream!!

  • Aw, try not to feel embarrassed! You are doing a great job, and doing what is best for you and your family right now.  I too am struggling with my living situation. Our house is rather big, but it is in a very undesirable neighborhood. Family and friends won't even come to visit.

I don't think anyone is living in their perfect situation when they first start out. And just think, with all the money you are saving, the sooner you will be able to be in a place you like more. But for now, try to be proud of what you are providing for DS! I am sure he is perfectly happy there :)

  • Youre saving 1k a month, that will put you in a much better situation down the road when it impact LO much more space wise, Great Job!

  • We are renting a house right now and saving (or trying our best to save) to buy a house maybe next year. As it is now we are okay in that Saoirse has a nice size bedroom, but when the new baby comes we only have a tiny "bedroom" that we now use as an office. We can just about fit a small crib and maybe a chair for me to BF in there, but all of the baby's clothes and things are going to have to be in the closet in Saoirse's room. Plus, I have no idea where all the crap that is in the office is going to go. In the living room maybe, but that's kind of ghetto-looking.

So you see, we're in a bit of a problem with space too, but the kids are so little they won't care for a while. You guys are doing a great job saving so I wouldn't worry. You'll be able to upgrade your living situation soon. Like pp said, I'm sure most people start off in humble abodes when they are first married and starting a family.

  • Thanks everyone. I know it's best for our family but sometimes I feel down about where we live when I see where my friends are living. We live in Westchester county NY which is an expensive part of the country. We should probabally look into moving so we can get more bang for our buck.

Thanks again for making me feel better.

  • I agree, when you first start out no body, well maybe a few people are living their ideal living situations. I remember when we first had DS 1. We had just moved into our new house and needed to buy a lot for it. We were living pay cheque to pay cheque and sometimes having to dip into our line of credit to make ends meet. It was so depressing.

You're doing great saving that much a month, and like someone else said, LO won't notice right now anyways. And if your friends come over and judge you, then they're not friends anyways. Think of it this way, you have a roof over your heads, and none of you are starving- at least I hope not. You're doing a great job :)

  • We are! We own our condo that is 2 bedroom/1 bathroom. We bought it in 2005, at the height of the housing bubble, and since then the value has dramatically decreased. We can't sell it without losing a lot of money, so we're sitting tight for right now.

I meant moving to another part of the country. Maybe one day. :)

This is what I was thinking as well. Tons of people would kill to be able to save that kind of money. You're doing exactly what you should be doing to best provide for your family down the road.

    I admire you.
