Trouble TTC

Do you ever wonder what people are thinking when they make suggestions?

As NIAW comes to a close, I thought I was one of the lucky few to have made it through this week without a single stupid thing said to me. Last night, I shared on FB my personal IF journey for the last 6-ish years (both while TTC and while TTA). And of course, I had to have the one person to make a stupid suggestion. And this was her response to my IF journey.

"Sarah, this was very brave of you indeed. I have a suggestion actually. I know it's going to sound gross, but I've heard that it's worked for other women who were having difficulties getting pregnant. It's called a colonic. It's only given by massage therapists who are licensed and certified. Not a colonoscopy.(sorry I can't spell that) ; while I was in school there was a woman who came and spoke to us about them. Now, they are a little uncomfortable, but they don't hurt. Ant the woman who was speaking about them experienced infertility as well. Her doctor told her there was no hope for her. So she gave up, took an interest in massage therapy, and she discovered the colonic. She had one, and I think she started getting them on a regular basis, and honestly ended up pregnant. She was a bit older, in her 40s but it worked for her. My advice would be to try it. she recommended it to other women who were trying to get pregnant as well. I hope this can help, and I honestly had no idea you were going through this. Again I know its sounds strange, but I would try it. I've personally had one, and it was a little uncomfortable, but you feel great afterwards. I hope this can help, and sorry if I told you too much info. Let me know if you have any questions!? my thoughts and prayers are with you!"

REALLY?!?! I seriously doubt that a colonic will fix my ovaries, cure my PCOS, and grow me a new fallopian tube!

Me: 25
Dx PCOS (June 2006, re-confirmed March 2012), Anemia (May 2010-Still fighting to correct it), Fibromyalgia (May 2011)
Initial b/w - normal
HSG (March 2012) revealed right tube open and looking great. Left tube deformed with hydrosalpinx.
Lap (April 2012) Removal of left fallopian tube. Right tube open and viable, but "rather enlarged." NO evidence of endometriosis...Uterus looks beautiful and "very capable" of carrying a pregnancy!
October 2012 - Clomid 50mg + trigger + IUI = BFN
With all factors taken into account, RE is recommending IVF. Planning on moving forward with treatment as a single woman using DS by Summer 2013.
After 17 months of trying, Surprise BFP #1 2.15.2008 | EDD 8.7.2008 | Lost 2.16.2008
After 2 more years of trying, Surprise BFP #2 1.29.2012 | EDD 9.11.2012 | Lost 1.29.2012
Surprise BFP #3 3.27.2012 | EDD 12/2/2012 | Lost 4.1.2012

  • It's hard for me to fathom sometimes how little people know about their bodies. But then again, if I'd gotten pregnant without any trouble maybe I wouldn't know much either (I'd like to think I wouldn't be that ignorant though...).

I know, right? I think if I'd known my arse gets pregnant, then I wouldn't be sitting here recovering from them surgically removing one of my tubes.

  • People are clueless and feel like they have to "fix" things. They want to "help" because surely what they've got to suggest to us (relaxing, taking a trip, boxers) is so original we never would have thought of it (though I guess in this instance it would be true...). Ironically, the "experts" on how to get pregnant are actually those who have actually had to try to get pregnant, regardless of whether or not they've been successful.

  • Does a colonic fix MFI too? Surely the sperm are produced in the bowels, right?

Well, Wikipedia thinks there's a hoax going on here: "No scientific evidence supports the alleged benefits of colon cleansing.[3] The bowel itself is not dirty and barring drugs, disease or mechanical blockage, cleans itself naturally without assistance.[4] Certain enema preparations have been associated with heart attacksand electrolyte imbalances, and improperly prepared or used equipment can cause infection or damage to the bowel. Frequent colon cleansing can lead to dependence on enemas to defecate and some herbs may reduce the effectiveness of prescription drugs."[5]

The gastroenterologist I used to work for said the same thing as Wikipedia. Red flag #1 (for me) you can only get them done by a massage therapist who is "licensed and certified." I didn't know that massage therapists were IF specialists...
