Baby Names

Arlo or Bode? Indira, Cora...

We are TTC at the moment.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the following;

(Note, if we have a boy Michael will be the middle name after my uncle, if we have a girl I would like Adele or Margaret after my Nana)

Boys:

Arlo (at the moment this is #1)

Bode (unsure whether to spell it this way or Bodhi, DH is unsure of this one)

Marley

Cooper

Marlow

Nolan

Carter

Girls:

Indira (nn Indie) - currently #1, also like India (love Indira Mae Adele)

Cora (DH only likes the spelling 'Kora' - I think that is far too Kardashian)

Rowan

Harper - although I fear it is becoming too common

Brooke

Scarlett

Ruby (but this is #1 in NZ at the moment so probably out for us)

Piper

Parker

Cassidy

Thoughts?

Re: Arlo or Bode? Indira, Cora...

  • I prefer the spelling Bodhi. I doubt Bode will ever be pronounced correctly.

Most of your girl names are NMS, but I do like Cora.

  • What a mix of names! My faves from your list...

Boy: Bodhi or Cooper (Bodhi sounds better with Michael. I want to like Arlo, but it reminds of Arlan for which I have a negative association.)

Girl: Love Scarlett Adele; like Harper, Brooke and Ruby (However, I think that Harper may be too popular and Brooke too ordinary since your other names are more "out there.")

  • For Marley, I think of the dog. Arlo is cute but I once knew a cat with that name. And Harper is definitely on the rise...at least in my area. Of my (many pregnant) friends alone, THREE of them named their DDs Harper w/in 6 months of each other!

  • Boys- Carter is my favourite, with Arlo coming in second. I really dislike Bode/Bodhi- my next door neighbour growing up had a dog named Bodhi so that's all I think when I hear it. Marley is totally a girl's name to me (and I am a person who likes unisex names on boys- we're considering Kelly for a second son).

Girls- my favourites are Brooke, Ruby, Cora, or Scarlett. I really dislike Kora- takes all the charm away and brings the name straight to Trashville, IMO. Rowan and Parker are boy names to me.

  • Interesting and fun list of names!

    Here are my thoughts/impressions

Arlo: I really like this name. Different without being weird. Kind of a less common version of Milo, which I also love.

Bode: I would say you should definitely spell it Bodhi. I want to pronounce Bode like it rhymes with the word "code." Also, based on the style of some of your other names, especially Indira, it seems like you are going for more of the sanskrit-type name, which, if I'm not mistaken, is better captured by the Bodhi spelling. To me, Bodhi does a better job of representing the name's meaning and source.

Marley: I think of either Bob or the dog. Don't love it compared to some of your other options.

Cooper: This name is just "meh" to me. Feels a bit trendy with the "er" at the end.

Marlow: I kind of like this name, especially for a boy. I like it better than Marley. Sounds more mature. However, if you aren't aware, various spellings of this name are being used on girls these days. That shouldn't necessarily deter you, IMO, because girls are being named so many unisex (and downright male) names these days. But just something to consider.

Nolan: I like this name. However, I do hear it a lot.

Carter: It's okay for me. Also seems a bit trendy with the 'er ending.

Indira: Love this name. Different, great meaning, cute nickname.

Cora: Very pretty name. Definitely spell it Cora!

Rowan: A little too masculine for me. I tend to think of this more as a boy's name. (I do like it for a boy)

Harper: I actually really like Harper. There's a lot of love/hate for this name on this board. But it does seem to be getting pretty trendy.

Brooke: Pretty name. Strikes me as a bit conservative for you based on the rest of your list.

Scarlett: I love this name. Spunky, fiery, cool, and sophisticated.

Ruby: This is my DH's favorite name. If this baby had been a girl it would have been a top contender. That said, I do think it's becoming pretty popular these days.

Piper: I really like Piper. Not my fav. But a fun name.

Parker: This is a boy's name to me. I generally dislike boy names on girls.

Cassidy: I like this name. It was on my long list when I was pregnant with my DD. But I do like some of your other choices better.

  • I like Arlo and Nolan from your boy list.  Both sound good with Michael, but I do prefer Nolan Michael.

I like Cora, Scarlett, and Ruby from your girl list.  Cora Margaret is a combination on my long list.  :)  I think Scarlett Adele and Ruby Adele sound fantastic as well!

    BLOG.

  • DD would have been Arlo if she had been a boy, so, love.

With Bode or Bodhi all I can think of is Bodie Broadus.

  • From your boys' list, I love Arlo and Nolan. Bode (no matter what the spelling) is NMS; I always picture an entitled (unintelligent) frat boy when I hear it.

Cooper is a dog's name, and Marley and Marlow are being used primarily on girls. Neither sounds remotely masculine to me.

I prefer India to Indira. I feel like you need some Indian background (which, maybe you have) to pull off Indira, since most people's only association with the name is Indira Gandhi. India is an old-school place name and is a character in Gone with the Wind, and I love it.

I also love Scarlett (one of my favorite names ever), Ruby, Piper (see siggy), Brooke, and Harper (though I DO think it's getting too popular).

Parker isn't a girl's name, and neither is Rowan, though I at least like it on a girl. Cora is ok (but Kora is NOT), and Cassidy is a little too country/Western for my taste.

Good luck! Hope you get your BFP soon!
