Decaf?

I am curious to know if decaf coffee is safe to drink every day.  I only have one 8 oz cup everyday.

Re: Decaf?

  • If a cup a day of regular coffee seems to be okay according to most, I don't see why a cup if decaf a day would be any worse.

What she said.  FYI - if you aren't supposed to have ANY caffeine for whatever reason, decaf does still have some in it but it's an extremely small amount.

  • i was told that a cup or two of regular coffee was fine, so im assuming decaf is ok unless your doctor says no

I don't drink decaf, only because the beans are pretty much bleached to remove the caffeine. There are some brands that use the swiss water process(chemical free) to remove the caffeine, but I haven't found any yet.

It's a long shot, but there's a coffee chain in the UK called Caffe Nero. I know that they use water to decaffeinate their beans. You could maybe look into whether they sell and ship their coffee online, like Starbucks does?

OP, yes, I imagine that it is safe to drink every day. Like PPs have mentioned, even small amounts of caffeine are safe on a daily basis. Be aware, though, that some people say decaff coffee still dehydrates you. Take that as seriously as you like (personally I don't).

I'm guessing you meant this when asking about decaf. I don't think most people are observant enough to know this about decaf and instead make general assumptions about it being safe.

  • If you're looking for brands that use swiss water decaffeination method, this site lists 5 of them, including wolfgang puck, jeremiah's pick, van houtte, and reunion island.

The main methods of decaffeinating coffee are all pretty safe.  Yes, the direct method uses methylene chloride as a solvent in the process, but this solvent is removed afterward with steam. Methylene chloride evaporates at 100 to 200 [degrees] F; beans are usually roasted at temperature of 350 to 425 [degrees] F, and coffee is brewed at 190 to 212 [degrees] F. Any amounts of methylene chloride left in brewed coffee would be less than one part per million.

The CO2 method, or supercritical fluid extraction method uses a pressurized system to remove the caffeine, and as mentioned before, the Swiss Water Process uses water.  Technically you may feel safer with one of these methods since a chemical solvent is not used in the process.

Decaf coffee only has about 3% of the caffeine that a regular coffee would have, so you'd have to drink a TON of it for that to be a concern.
