Kari vs Carrie

I don't like the name Carrie (care -ee) but I am kinda loving Kari (Kahr-ee or Car-ee).

But I figure most people will say the name like Carrie.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Could I use it as a nickname for a longer name?

All I can think of is Katherine or some form which has already been used in my family.

Re: Kari vs Carrie

  • Cari is another way to get the pronunciation you want, like on the show "Cash and Cari." I like the name on its own as opposed to going with a longer name and calling her Kari, but I know other ladies feel the complete opposite and like having the more formal option for when she's an adult.

  • I know a Mari, who pronounces it Mahr-ee. Then again, I assumed it was Mary when I first learned her name. It's a pretty name, but you'll probably have to do some explaining when people meet her.

  • Hmm. The only Kari I know pronounced her name like Carrie. I've always just assumed it was an alternative spelling, and I'd never dream of pronouncing it differently.

That said, I think the pronunciation you want is easily taught/learned. I think you'd only have to correct people once.

As far as using it as a NN, this says it's a Norwegian nickname for Katarina.

  • I know a Kari so that's why I know it's not pronounced like Carrie. Before I met her I assumed it was pronounced like Carrie. Most people will probably pronounce it wrong unless they know a Kari.

    What about Karina?

  • I know two Karis, and they both pronounce it like "Carrie." One is short for Karen, not sure about the other.

I think it's a lovely name, but nobody is ever likely to pronounce it right. Of course, my name isn't weird at all and people still say it wrong, so who knows. You may have that issue anyway :)

  • I know a Kari, and it is pronounced like car-ee not care-ee so I know the pronunciation you are going for. She will have to correct people, although it is not a huge deal.

The only names I can think of that this would be a nickname for is Karina, Katarina or Katrina. Maybe Caroline if you went with the Cari spelling, but that really is closer to Carrie.

If you like Kari, what about Cori instead? Similar sound, but easier to pronounce. Would be a nice nickname for Corinne.

  • I am a Caroline who has always gone by the NN Carrie (Care-ee). There are lots of ways that I have seen Carrie spelled, including Kari. I think the difference in pronouciation would have to be explained a lot (if you want her called Car-ee) but I really do not think that is a huge deal. People always call me Carolyn when they first meet me, and I just correct them (if I will see them a lot in the future) or ignore it if there is no reason that they would call me by my name again.

  • My mom spelled my name K-e-r-i so that people would not call me CAR-ee. I thing K-a-r-i can go either way, but Cari is always CAR-ee.

Therefore I would say Car-e. But if it hadnt been for that movie I would have thought Care-e.

I know a Kari and she pronounces it Kahr-ee
  • I'm a Kari (Care-ee). I get called car-ee quite often, but it doesn't bother me. Once you correct someone they almost always remember it. I would have loved the spelling Kerry (care-ee).

  • I'm a Cari (care-ee) and I get called care-ee much more often than car-ee when first meeting people. Like PP said, if it's someone I'll never really interact with, I just ignore it and respond. Otherwise, I politely correct them so they know the correct pronunciation and move on. Since care-ee is the more common pronunciation, I think that most people are going to assume it's pronounced that way.

  • I'm a Kari (pronounced care-ee) and I love my name.  I don't expect people to say/spell it correctly and I didn't like it when I was younger but I adore it now.

  • Its funny because my name is Carrie, must be a regional accent because people pronounce it C-A-ree, strong A like in apple. I really nevermind though if someone calls me care-ee or kerri. Around here if you would want the pronunciation of kah-ree I would say to spell it Cari.
