My diapers are not really stinky, they just don't smell clean and fresh. There is a mild lingering poop odor. I can smell it when I hold the clean diaper close to my nose. I have used:
- Ecos Lavender
- Arm & Hammer Free
- Homemade Detergent 1 (Ivory, OxiClean, Washing Soda and Borax)
- Tide Free & Clear
- (current) Homemade detergent 2 (Oxiclean, Washing Soda and Borax)
My Wash routine
- Speed Wash Cold, no detergent, water plus
- Normal Wash, Hot/Cold, water plus, extra rinse
I have stripped recently after disaster detergent 1, and use FuzziBunz OS.
Re: Not Stink, per se
I don't know about all of these but I didn't think Tide F&C or Arm and Hammer were CD safe. I'd try regular Tide powder which is CD safe. It seems to work well for cloth no matter what type of water you have. I'd use the amount the box says to use for your load size and then keep rinsing until you don't see bubbles anymore. After that I'd use 2-3 Tbsps per wash.
If you have a mile poop smell it doesn't sound like your diapers are getting clean enough. Too much detergent is bad but so is not enough. How well are you dunking/ spraying your diapers before laundry day? Are you leaving too much poop on them?
I'd try another detergent, or try making a different one. I've heard conflicting stories about homemade detergents, and a LOT of diaper companies - even ones that don't make their own detergents - recommend against it. Most of those ingredients, while they work awesome on diapes, should only be used occasionally or it will greatly shorten the life of your diapers.
I've heard great things about soap nuts, and I'm currently liking Tiny Bubbles. I think that may be my new one.
DD is still EBF, so I haven't started rinsing her diapers yet? I thought breast milk poop was OK to go straight to the wash. Does anyone else do this or should I be rinsing it off prior to washing?
I had this problem when I was using R&G. I switched to bumGenius and the stinkies went away. I think I've heard that bumGenius is the same as Country Save.
And EBF poo is fine to go in the wash. I never rinsed and didn't have any problems.
F&C detergents don't harm diapers, but they're not effective (I forget why.)
A. change your first rinse to warm water so you dissolve all the oils in the ebf poo and it actually rinses out (have you ever rinsed a butter dish with cold water? doesn't work so well)
B. try tide regular (ultra, original scent)
