Infertility Veterans

I have an ectopic boob....

Yes, ectopic boob.  Basically extra breast tissue where it isn't supposed to be...under my arm.  I had an appt this am with my breast doctor to get my MRI results(I have the breast cancer gene). My MRI is clear (YAY!) but I have this gross extra tissue under my arm on my right side that really bothers me. It's always sore.  I am getting a u/s on Monday to make sure they don't see anything in there but either way, we are going to cut it out. It drives me crazy as you can basically see "boob" under my arm if I wear sleeveless or a bathing suit.  It's been there for years and always annoyed me. In my 20s I always thought it was just fat but is there even when I am thin ( I am not current thin so it is even bigger, lol). Apparently it would become a 3rd boob under my arm if I ever ended up KU!  So, what's another surgery, right??

I know it sounds strange but I am soo happy for my extra boob to finally have a name and that I can get it removed! I am really a medical nightmare, LOL...

Re: I have an ectopic boob....

  • Errrr....hmmmm..... I have never heard of that before! Glad the MRI was all clear, that must be a huge relief for you.

I hate to say it but there is part of me that did have a big chuckle with this story. I am sure that there are some flat chested gals out there that would be jealous.

Fun away, glad that such a bothersome issue can be fixed for you, GL with the procedure and again, I am so happy for you that the MRI was all clear.

    Multiple ectopics, 2 failed IVF's
IVF #1: Did not get to ET, embies all failed PGD (major chromosomal defects)
IVF #2: We have 2 chromosomally perfect embies as a result of PGD (Boy/Girl) 1 failed the thaw (Girl) Transferred 1, yet ended as a c/p
Thought it was the end of our TTC Journey 6/20/2012
SHOCK BFP 9/28/2012: IT'S A BOY! and everything is normal !!!!!!

I agree that it sounds funny but trust me, it looks ugly and no one would want it! It makes me very self conscious with cameras as I don't want the boob hangin out as it just looks like fat.

Yes!! The doctor actually told me that breast tissue can grow in various places that it shouldn't and that's how some people get a 3rd nipple!!  Hence the term "ectopic"= growing where it shouldn't be.  My underarm boob does not have a nipple thankfully, LOL..

I don't have another surgery to compare it to so take my comments with a grain of salt. I found recovery to be a bit tough. It was weeks before I could lift up my arm comfortably just doing simple things -- getting dressed, washing my hair, etc.

They didn't give me exercises but I'm sure it would have helped. I favored and protected my surgery side for a long while. It's just a bad spot to have surgery up in that joint. Hopefully they won't cut through muscle for you. I escaped that and it made recovery easier, for sure.

Also, my memory is colored by the fact that I had a hack surgeon who left me with permanent nerve damage. Good times. All that said, I'm so glad I had it removed. It was painful and uncomfortable much of the time.

  • Also, if you have surgery on a Wednesday, you should be able to return to work on Monday with no problem.  You'll still be moving gingerly and you won't be able to lift much for a while, but work should be doable.

Yikes! I've never been cut either so it should be interesting. My doc is a cancer breast surgeon and does mastectomies etc so I "assume" she isn't a hack. She did tell me there would be a decent size scar but I can handle that. That sucks that your doc was a hack. I'll let you know how it goes!

In a way I am envious -- I don't have an ectopic boob but the ones I have are out of control.  I have been fantasizing about a reduction...

  • I had something similar but they didn't call it an ectopic boob.  They told me it was a benign tumor.  I also had it removed, but ended up getting one on the other side when I got pregnant :/  Still have it because I never lost the excess weight.  It is an eyesore, but fortunately neither of the ectopic boobs had a nipple LOL.
2nd ectopic resulted in loss of tube. HSG revealed remaining tube is "severely torqued".
