Everything looks great, but we'd like to do more tests...WHAT?

Okay, so yesterday I had a high def ultrasound.  Long story short, I have too much amniotic fluid.  No GD, not having multiples etc.  Both the high risk doctor and the u/s tech said baby looks big and healthy, but the doctor wants to do another high def u/s in a few weeks and then a special u/s to rule out any heart defects other u/s would not catch.  Mind you, they said that 80 percent of the time women that have high levels of amniotic fluid have it for no apparent reason.  In addition, they said there is nothing they can do in utero for any of the conditions that they have not already ruled out.   IF they found anything, they would send me to a hospital in another city that specializes in neonatal heart conditions. I have said yes to the follow up, but am postponing the heart u/s at the moment.

My questions:  Is having the heart u/s unneccessary and just looking for trouble?  Am I in denial and should I suck it up and have it done?  Does insurance generally cover these tests (I have pretty good insurance)?

  • Personally, I wouldn't worry about insurance covering it.  I would get the test at least for peace of mind or to be prepared should baby be born with a heart defect you didn't expect from all prior testing.

Insurance is the least of my concerns (but it's still a concern), so you are right.  I guess the reason I don't want to do it, is because in my heart of hearts, I know she is absolutely fine.  It's the test itself that stresses me out, not so much the results.

  • I would get the testing done. Better safe than sorry. At least you'll know that if there is a problem, the doctors will expect it when she gets here and they'll be better equipped to handle it.

  • Thanks ladies.  You are right.  I am going to discuss this with my regular OB on Monday at my appointment and then schedule the second ultrasound.  Even though I liked the high risk doctor, I really trust my regular OB.  Thanks again.
  • Just wanted to give you HUGS - I had Idiosyncratic Polyhydramnios (high amniotic fluid levels for no apparent reason) with my first pregnancy, and everything turned out just fine.  Just wanted you to know there was someone out there who may know what type of feelings are going on in your heart and mind right now!

PM me if you need to chat!
