Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

ultrasound question

A few weeks ago I went to the ER when I miscarried and they did 2 ultrasounds.  They could not see my left ovary and asked me if I had any surgery to remove anything.  I said no.  They told me that if the intestines are filled w/ "material" then that can block the view.... so I didn't think anything of it.  However I remembered a few months ago when I had a test called a  Hysterosalpingography... the tech could only see 1 tube and predicted that I might have a blockage in my one tube and had a 50% chance of getting pregnant.  However the dr came back to she was able to "faintly" see the contrast and there did not appear to be any blockages.

Am I over thinking this... or should I be worried?  Just wondering if anyone had any issues.  I am also thinking of looking for another OB/GYN as my current one did not seem interested in doing any post miscarriage exams and scoffed when I asked him about seeing a fertility specialist.  He said that even though I'm 34 that I should wait til have 3-4 miscarriages before seeing a specialist.

Re: ultrasound question

  • I would get a second opinion as well. Everything is probably okay but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

As for waiting for 3-4 miscarriages...that is a load of BS. And it makes me mad that doctors think losing babies is just no big deal and we should just accept losing so many! I would do a few things right off the bat after just one loss. I would ask for progesterone testing at 7dpo to see what you're levels are and if they are high enough to sustain a pregnancy. Progesterone deficiency is one of the most common causes of miscarraige and the most easily treated.

I'd also get thyroid levels checked.

If you were to have a second loss then I'd demand extensive testing...its still probably not necessary most of the time but why wait until you've been through so many heartaches before figuring anything out.

  • I was seeing a specialist, having several ultrasounds a month, and about half the time my left ovary was "hiding."  It is common, especially the left one, because it is near the bowel.  I would consult a fertility specialist anyway, regardless of what your doc says, and see if there is anything obviously wrong.  They have ultrasounds machines readily available and could give you a quick answer.  So sorry you are going through this and that your ob/gyn is not very supportive.

  • Thanks all!  I have an interview appointment with another OB/GYN in a couple of weeks.   I'm glad I asked for your opinion and I did speak to a couple of friends.  Everyone agrees that I should look for a new doctor.   I rather take precautions to ensure that all is ok.
