I swear my doctor's scale is wrong

Quick doctors appointment today. Heartbeat good, measuring good, all in all, baby is good. All good news.

(Warning: STOP reading here if you're sick of weight gain posts.)

Except for the fact that according to the digital scale at my doctors office, I have gained EIGHT pounds since my last appointment, which was only 3 friggin weeks ago. Is that even humanly possible? My doctor mentions the jump in weight gain, and I tell him I really have no clue why it went up so much, since I haven't been eating more than normal. He tells me as long as I watch the carbs and portion sizes, it will probably level back out. (Didn't seem too concerned other than that.) I leave feeling a little crappy about it because I've already had a month of significant weight gain. (And I thought I was upset about 7 lbs in 4 weeks!)

So after my appointment, I swing into Kohl's to get a stand-in wedding band (yay swelling!) and while I'm there I decide to step on one of the digital scales in housewares. 143 when the scale at the doctor's office said 152. Whaaa? I know all scales will be slightly off, but almost 10 pounds? Seriously? Since there's three identical scales at my doctor's office, spread out in different parts of the hallway, I never go to the same scale each time. I'm convinced they're not calibrated or something. I don't have a scale at home to base anything off of, so I'm clueless as to how much weight I've actually gained, and it's starting to stress me out. I hope this doesn't sound incredibly vain; I'm not as much concerned about "getting fat" than just staying in a healthy range month to month, and eight pounds in three weeks just seems excessive.

  • I could have written this post yesterday.

Except for me, it was 8 pounds in 2 weeks. LOL

I'm pretty sure I'd be the first to know if I had actually gained 8 pounds in just 2 weeks. I mean, I know I'm not getting any smaller, but really.

I'm chalking it up to being weighed on different scales. ::la la la la la la la::

  • Are you going to bring this up to them next time?

Exactly what I mean! I have ONE pair of maternity jeans in a size medium that still fit as well as they did a month ago. Other than my belly growing, and starting to have some swelling issues, I don't feel eight pounds heavier. Water retention? Scale issues? I'm just downright confused.

Camilla- I hadn't thought about it. I've been mostly in shock. But yeah I should mention something to him, but then I risk finding out I'm wrong.

  • Oh I told my doctor. She was like "so let's talk about your weight gain" and I was all "that scale be crazy"

She agreed with me. I mean, she didn't delete it from my record so maybe she was just humoring me, but whatever. She said the scales were all different.

LOL! I think I just fell in love with you a little bit. Thanks for saying this! Even if your doc's full of BS, it makes me feel a lot better.

  • You must go to the same doctor as I do! Last time I went I gained 8 pounds in three weeks too, which I realize might happen now and then, BUT before that my total weight gain had been 6 pounds so that seemed a little extreme. I always weigh myself before I go to the doctor because I don't like surprises and I like to see what to expect when I get on the scale there. Usually, my scale and the doctors scale are exactly the same so I WAS expecting a 4 pound gain... but NOT an 8 pound gain! I said something to the nurse and she mentioned that she thinks that scale is always off so I was annoyed that they put me on that one! She said they would weigh me again before I left, but I figured it would all even out at some point. They just better not put me on that scale again!

yeah, don't worry about it. I mean, I'm sure some women are in denial about their weight gain, but I honestly think you would know if you were gaining too rapidly. You DO own a mirror, right? And your pants fit? And you're being honest with yourself about what you are eating? Really, don't sweat it.

  • They actually changed the weigh-in procedure at my hospital because they had realized all their scales were different, so now there's only one scale.  I would say mention it to your doc and try to stick to the same one if you can because scales do not necessarily measure the same.
