Toddlers: 24 Months+

How long will this last?

We entered preschool in Feb., and we've worked out all of the kinks that I've discussed here whereby settling into a routine..

However, because he has been off and on sick (doc says normal for kids first entering preschool) he has been missing class, events and parties.  I feel terrible, and its not like a normal cough/sniffle, its full blown sick (fever, junky coughs).  I've missed a ton of work too.

We are in the 24hour hold currently.  There is no sign of a fever since last night. The pedi says for DS to enter school when he has been 24 hours without a fever spike.

I'm just wondering how long will it be until his body fully adjusts to the germs in school? and we stop missing so much school.

Re: How long will this last?

  • I totally understand, DD only goes 2 days a week but since she started going, she's had 3-4 bad colds (fever, green boogs, no sleep, the works) and actually had one that took 6 weeks and 3 rounds of antibiotics to shake off.  I'm guessing it'll take a year for their immune systems to adjust, but I think it'll always be more of an issue than it was before.  When I think of when I worked with school aged kids (5+)- illnesses were always rampant until we hit high school pretty much.  I hope he feels better soon!

  • Honestly probably quite awhile.  DS started daycare at 3 months and is still constantly sick in the fall and winter.  Hand foot mouth, pink eye, ear infections, sinus infections, colds, fevers, etc.  He's had it all at one point.  Spring and summer just tends to be lots of runny noses.

  • I guess it really depends on the child but when DS started daycare when he was about 4 months old, he was sick very frequently and still gets sick often.  Most of the time it's just a runny nose but he's had some serious illnesses also.  I think it took about a year or just under before it got better.  Sorry.

  • For most kids in DC/PS going f/t it takes close to 1 yr for their immune systems to be built up.Luckily, summer is around the corner and you can skip most of the winter born illnesses. Honestly, I'd rather have my child miss P/S than the more important elementary years.

  • DD started daycare when she was 12 weeks old, but it was at the beginning of April, so most of the cold/flu junk had passed. The next year (when she was 10-17 months) she got sick quite a bit during the cold/flu season. This year, she's had a couple of minor colds and MRSA infection (which I can't link to daycare), but has been otherwise healthy. DH and I both have killer immune systems and rarely get sick, so part of it may be genetics, but she's definitely better able to resist the colds and viruses this year.
